Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Dartmouth’s campus-wide wireless umbrella is incredibly convenient and widely acclaimed. It provides coverage to even those seemingly hard-to-reach places on campus, like the Green, frat row, and the gym. In addition, every dorm room and most public spaces are equipped with Ethernet ports for a faster, more-reliable Internet connection. A student’s laptop is his or her constant companion through the four years of hard work it takes to earn a Dartmouth degree. Incoming freshmen are required to purchase a laptop or bring one with them from home—most students opt to buy one from the school for the sake of convenience and interoperability.

Make no mistake, Dartmouth students are wired. Campus e-mail, or “Blitzmail,” is THE primary means of student-to-student communication among undergraduates. Blitzmail performs a social function similar to AOL Instant Messenger—it’s an easy-to-use, cost-free way of getting in touch with anyone on campus at anytime for any reason. Students speak casually about “blitz”-ing their friends, classmates, and professors, and check their inboxes habitually. Dartmouth’s online course registration tool, bannerstudent, is a service of the Office of the Registrar and also allows students to monitor grade reports, housing information, billing and other administrative matters. Professors will likely use another online program, Blackboard, to keep students apprised of course requirements and assignments.

Decent Computing

Since the school requires computer ownership, accessibility for lab computers isn't a top priority, but there are plenty of computers to use all over campus. The wireless network functions decently, but it won't work in some places. Most people prefer to connect through ethernet because it's a definite improvement. Printing can be a total pain; the GreenPrint system is temperamental at best. Computing Services is helpful, but be prepared to wait in an extremely long line for assistance. Otherwise, I don't have too many complaints.

Computers, Etc.

Campus wide wireless is convenient and generally very reliable. Students are required to have their own laptops, and financial aid can help with the cost. Computer services are decent. Desktop computers are available throughout campus for those who don't have their computers handy or working.
