College Prowler Take
Dartmouth’s campus-wide wireless umbrella is incredibly convenient and widely acclaimed. It provides coverage to even those seemingly hard-to-reach places on campus, like the Green, frat row, and the gym. In addition, every dorm room and most public spaces are equipped with Ethernet ports for a faster, more-reliable Internet connection. A student’s laptop is his or her constant companion through the four years of hard work it takes to earn a Dartmouth degree. Incoming freshmen are required to purchase a laptop or bring one with them from home—most students opt to buy one from the school for the sake of convenience and interoperability. Make no mistake, Dartmouth students are wired. Campus e-mail, or “Blitzmail,” is THE primary means of student-to-student communication among undergraduates. Blitzmail performs a social function similar to AOL Instant Messenger—it’s an easy-to-use, cost-free way of getting in touch with anyone on campus at anytime for any reason. Students speak casually about “blitz”-ing their friends, classmates, and professors, and check their inboxes habitually. Dartmouth’s online course registration tool, bannerstudent, is a service of the Office of the Registrar and also allows students to monitor grade reports, housing information, billing and other administrative matters. Professors will likely use another online program, Blackboard, to keep students apprised of course requirements and assignments.

Pretty much everyone has their own laptop. Blitz, the campus e-mail, is the preferred method of communication. It's used almost like instant messenger, so people are on their computers or Blackberries fairly often.

Students must own a computer at Dartmouth. Freshmen often order laptops through the school, which is a good idea because most everything is already set up for you on your computer, and you have access to computing help, plus warranties. Dartmouth is always pushing more and more for technological accessibility to make students' lives easier, and, necessarily, more linked to the world outside.

Dartmouth requires all students to own their own laptop or personal computer. As far as I know, there are probably always computers available if needed.

The computer access at Dartmouth is ridiculous. I often wonder what we need so many computers and so much technology for? We have every convenience and are spoiled rotten when it comes to this, so get excited! |

Class registration is entirely electronic and takes about five minutes. It’s really easy to add, drop, or change classes. The Banner Student Web site where you register also has your grades, allows you to sign up for PE classes, and all sorts of other stuff. |
