The bar scene in and around Hanover is virtually nonexistent and pretty much a nonfactor for most students. The same goes for clubs—the only nearby club is in West Lebanon, and it is such a haul that few of the 21-and-over crowd bother to frequent it. The vast majority of partying is fraternity-sponsored and takes place in fraternity basements. It is worth noting that Dartmouth is probably one of the few colleges in the country where possessing a fake ID as an underclass student is totally unnecessary. Anyone who wants to drink can go to the fraternities, where there is an extremely lax dispensary policy regarding booze. If you want to buy it yourseld, hard liquor is sold in state-owned stores in New Hampshire, and beer and wine is sold in most grocery and convenience stores. While Dartmouth has a reputation as a party school, Hanover is definitely not a party town—most businesses close by 10 p.m. on the weekends and even earlier on weeknights. Even though it can sometimes be fun to chill in the dorms with your close friends, be prepared to swill gallons of cheap beer in frat basements if you’re of a mind to venture out in search of entertainment.

There are really no bars and clubs off campus. Parties revolve around the fraternity scene. Though Dartmouth parties are generally just dances with drunk people, they can also be fun, especially on the big weekends like Homecoming or Winter Carnival.

For those that don’t like the party scene, there are always cool events to go to. Dartmouth attracts a lot of interesting speakers. I’ve seen Ehud Barak, Bishop Desmond Tutu, Alison Brown, Charles Ogletree, and the NASA astronauts who helped repair the Hubble space telescope. There are music groups, plays, comedians, and other things to hear all the time. Once I got to see Itzhak Perlman for only five bucks! A capella is also very popular on campus. |

Parties on campus are nearly all fraternity parties. No cover is allowed to be charged at the doors, which is nice. Depending on the night, there is usually a large party or two at various houses combined with lower-key scenes at all others. Off-campus options include Murphy's, a bar and grill; Canoe Club, a classier option with lots of great drinks; Molly's, known for $2 margaritas; India Queen; Ramunto's, pizza and beer; and 5 Olde, a bar/grill.

Every person who has come to visit me has had a blast at night. There is a lot to do (considering our location), and people seldom complain about options. It’s more common to hear people whine about having too much work to go out. |
Facts
Organization Parties
While most campus parties are thoroughly lame, a campus event in Collis Commonground or elsewhere can be a decent kickoff to a long and exciting night.

What to Do if You're Not 21
Catch a movie, hit the frats, or find some wholesome campus fun—Dartmouth provides much of it, such as Fuel Nightclub in Collis Center, which invites independent performers from across the country to campus as part of the Friday Night Rock program.
