College Prowler Take

While the quality and variety of the food prepared by Dartmouth Dining Services makes venturing off campus in search of a decent meal virtually unnecessary, it can be fun to reward yourself every once in awhile with a trip to Mai Thai, Molly’s, or Ramunto’s. Off-campus dining options in and around the town of Hanover are varied and plentiful—the food is agreeable and the prices are almost always reasonable, especially considering the alternative cost of eating on campus. Every Dartmouth student has his or her favorite off-campus eatery and some have one or two they think are less-than-spectacular, but on the whole, students consider themselves lucky to have such variety and affordability right in their own backyard.

There are a few decent pizza shops in town, as well as a couple of good places to grab breakfast—on the go or sit-down, it doesn’t matter. The coffeeshop scene in Hanover is pretty respectable, and there’s a smattering of authentic, American-style bar and grill places in Hanover and farther afield in West Lebanon, New Hampshire and White River Junction, Vermont. There are also less-expensive chain restaurants like Chili’s and Applebee’s and even fast food options like Taco Bell, Wendy’s, and McDonalds in West Leb. One popular thing to do, especially in the wintertime, is order Chinese or Indian takeout and have the meal delivered directly to your dorm—most establishments are happy to deliver to campus for a nominal charge. Another mainstay of every Dartmouth student’s experience is EBA’s late-night take-out/delivery option. Because on-campus dining usually shuts down by 1 a.m., EBA’s policy of leaving its doors and phone lines open until 2:10 a.m. can be a godsend for students up late studying or partying hard.

There are actually a lot of...

There are actually a lot of off-campus options in town, including Murphy's, a grill/pub; Canoe Club, a bit classier American spot; Lou's, a diner, but's only open until 3 p.m.; Ramunto's for pizza; Gusanoz for Mexican; Jewel of India, the better of two Indian restaurants, Yama, which is Korean and awesome; and Bagel Basement. Not as good and overrated are Molly's, Mai Thai, The Orient, and EBAs, which is the only option in town after midnight unfortunately. There are also some places within driving distance.

Restaurants in Hanover are good...

Restaurants in Hanover are good with a fairly varied selection. There is a Thai place, a Chinese restaurant, and a nice Italian joint, etc. Also, the options seem to expand every year—a new café with great desserts and a great Japanese sushi restaurant are recent additions. Still, the on-campus food is pretty much where the social scene is at because Dartmouth does a good job at keeping our food options varied and delicious.

There are not very many...

There are not very many restaurants in Hanover. Two of the better ones, The Canoe Club and The Hanover Inn, are too expensive for most students to frequent. Other restaurants are affordable but are still overpriced for what they offer. Although it has a limited menu, 5 Olde serves some of the most affordable food in the area, it is always very satisfying, and the workers there are incredibly friendly. The Orient, a Chinese/Japanese restaurant, is worth going to for its lunch specials.

For upscale dining off-campus,...

For upscale dining off-campus, Zin’s Winebistro and the Hanover Inn provide high-quality classic fare, like prime rib, lamb, and so on. The most notable restaurant in the area is Lou’s Diner. Lou’s has been serving Dartmouth students for over 50 years and has perfected the art of huge portions and delicious food. Some students stay up until Lou’s opens at 6 a.m. to grab an early breakfast.

There’s a Chili’s in West Leb. It’s really good and about the only sit-down chain place around. West Leb also has a couple Chinese buffets, which are extremely greasy but good in their own way.
