College Prowler Take
So the consensus is in—Dartmouth is a great place to go to school! For most students in most situations, it is truly the experience of a lifetime. An overwhelming majority of Dartmouth students fall head-over-heels in love with the place. It is little wonder that Dartmouth has one of the highest alumni giving rates of any college or university in the country. The College is certainly a very unique place to pursue an undergraduate degree, and the academic experience alone is worth its weight in gold. For the most part, Dartmouth professors, administrators, and support staff care deeply about the students and want to do whatever they can to make each student’s experience the best it can possibly be. All that being said, Dartmouth is not for everyone. It is definitely a high-intensity school. The turnaround time between when classes begin and when finals are due each term is pretty rapid, and it’s not at all difficult to get snowed under—no pun intended. The social scene at Dartmouth is dominated by savvy, urban, prep-school types who are accustomed to living away from home and making their own rules, so learning how to share in many of the values, attitudes, and elements of their lifestyle and still remain true to yourself can be a challenge for many students. Dartmouth’s isolation and insularity are two of its biggest drawbacks. A phenomenon known as the “Dartmouth Bubble”—the news, information, and culture vacuum caused by Dartmouth’s geographic isolation from all major population centers—tends to breed a myopic view of college life among students and causes many to overemphasize the importance of the social goings-on at Dartmouth. It is sometimes easy to lose sight of the fact that the world is a lot bigger than Hanover and that your life will ultimately be a lot richer than those four short, crazy years you spend in college. If you commit yourself to taking Dartmouth exactly as it is and prevent yourself from building it up in your mind into something it’s not, you will likely do well here and enjoy your college experience immensely.

Overall, it's a really superb...
Overall, it's a really superb place to be, but you have to learn how to make the most of it. I actually was very unhappy freshman year and was close to transferring out, but I'm really, really happy that I stuck it out because the three years after that have been amazing, and I realized it was mainly the courses I was taking. They were over my head and consumed my life freshman year.

I’ve greatly enjoyed my college...
I’ve greatly enjoyed my college experience so far. I’ve met so many cool people who have enriched my time at Dartmouth. While classes are important, social life shouldn’t be neglected. Getting to know new people by joining clubs or trying new activities is always fun. Also, there are a few Dartmouth traditions that are shared by the members of each class. For example, during Homecoming, the freshman class runs around a huge bonfire the number of times of their class year. So, for example, students in the class of 2010 were supposed to run around 110 times. Not too many people did all of it, but it’s a fun experience, and it’s great watching each new first-year class partake in the festivities.

If I had to come to Dartmouth all...
If I had to come to Dartmouth all over again, I would do it because I have met some of my best friends here. However, class issues at Dartmouth are really agitating, and most students seem oblivious to it. I am also jaded by the Greek system—alcohol is involved in almost all social interactions, and many students drink fairly often to the point of passing out. Diversity is a joke. The vast majority of students are wealthy and share a similar background, no matter their race. Students who come from different socioeconomic backgrounds have a harder time fitting in. There is also not a very big LGBTQ presence here. It's a very stuffy place, where social posturing seems to predominate, and the worst kind of intellectual pretension is made necessary. Dartmouth also seems a hotbed of neuroticism. I think this is because Dartmouth is a very stressful atmosphere, where students are made to perform and compete at all times.

I’d say that I’m enjoying...
I’d say that I’m enjoying Dartmouth and I love my friends here. As far as the location, I don’t really like it all that much, but I do feel really safe at Dartmouth and it’s nice to be away from a city for a while. |

If you want to find out a little more about campus life, you can go to www.thedartmouth.com. The school newspaper is pretty helpful with assessing what life is like, how important frats are, and so on. |
