College Prowler Take
With little influence from the outside world, serious crime in Hanover is virtually a non-factor. Bike theft is common, but Dartmouth’s Safety & Security team (S&S for short) does a good job of tracking down stolen property. Students are always encouraged to lock their dorm room doors and secure freestanding bikes to designated bike racks, but the fact that many fail to comply with even these relatively hassle-free guidelines demonstrates how little concern students tend to have for safety and security issues on campus. Blue-light safety phones are a near-ubiquitous feature on college campuses these days, and Dartmouth is no exception. S&S maintains a visible presence on campus and remains vigilant in the unlikely event that trouble should arise. With classes, activities, and friends to keep up with, college students in general shouldn’t have to worry about their personal safety or the security of their belongings, and at Dartmouth, they don’t have to! There's really not much crime to...
There's really not much crime to speak of other than accidental coat theft at parties and the occasional missing bicycle—so lock 'em up. The Good Samaritan policy is the most unique security measure, I think. Basically, if your friend drank too much and you're worried, call Safety and Security and neither of you will get in trouble with the school—they just want to help.

Campus Safety and Security...
Campus Safety and Security (referred to as S&S) does a great job of protecting people. Of the minimal crime that exists, the majority of issues involve people accidentally taking the wrong jacket at frat parties or the occasional stolen bike that wasn't locked up.

The campus is very secure and has...
The campus is very secure and has minimal crime—same with the actual town of Hanover. The most news you'll hear of in any given week are the actions of local teenagers and issues of vandalism. The campus itself is patrolled by Safety and Security officers who are usually transporting injured athletes to and from class. Also, in case of emergencies or extreme laziness or paranoia, a student can push a call button at one of many stations across campus and a Safety and Security officer will arrive promptly to provide assistance.

I feel comfortable walking alone...
I feel comfortable walking alone on campus at any hour of the day or night. Safety and Security is always driving around patrolling. I'm not sure how often there are cases of date rape, but I have never experienced it or known anybody who has.

As for security and safety, don’t worry. The biggest crime at Dartmouth is bike theft, and [perpetrators] usually return your bike when they’re done with it. Dorms are always open; no one locks their doors. It’s probably one of the safest campuses around, and even so, there is an awesome Safety and Security force that patrol the campus and can help you out. |
