College Prowler Take
If you plan to come to Dartmouth, you might as well start shopping for a heavy winter coat and reliable pair of snow boots immediately. The layered look is unvaryingly “in” at Dartmouth from winter to winter. With snow blanketing the ground from Thanksgiving through spring break, it’s easy to forget how the Green got its name. Mud season follows closely on the heels of the melting snow but soon yields to a gorgeous, vibrant spring. During autumn, the trees change early and dramatically—the region is well known for its spectacular fall foliage. Summer weather is lazy and peaceful. The area around Dartmouth is breathtakingly scenic in all seasons. Some students manage their D-Plans to avoid being caught on campus during the winter in order to avoid complications stemming from Seasonal Affective Disorder, which sometimes affects people who are not accustomed to the limited daylight hours of extreme latitudes.

Summer is beautiful and actually...
Summer is beautiful and actually gets pretty warm, so bring a bathing suit for the river. Fall is really nice and comfortable for a while, but the weather quickly gets cold. Winter lasts for approximately 5 months depending on the year. It's cold, snowy, and sometimes brutal, but in recent years there is almost always a mid-winter warm spell where people walk around in flip-flops and shorts—50 degrees or so feels wonderful sometimes.
Spring is muddy but a drastic change and is much appreciated.

Brrrr. Dartmouth is cold—and rainy. Bring your rain boots and warm down jacket. Still, the summers and parts of spring and fall in New Hampshire are beautiful. Regardless, it is fairly easy to enjoy all types of weather. For example, I took PE skiing and PE snowshoeing during the two winters I was on campus.

For the winter, make sure you have a big thick parka—it can be frigid here. Make sure you have an umbrella for the spring—it pours! However, it also is very warm in the early fall and late spring, so you might even want to bring shorts. And bring a Frisbee for nice days on the Green!

New England weather changes all the time. You’ll freeze your ass off in the winter, but the campus looks beautiful year round. |
