Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

There is simply not a tremendous selection of on-campus dining choices at Davidson, as students don’t hesitate to point out. Vail Commons is the single cafeteria on campus and the main place to use your meal plan. Aside from Commons, students can use their meal plans at the Union Café, which serves a number of deli and grill options, as well as at the WildCat Den, which makes sandwiches at lunchtime. Many students ultimately choose to forgo the meal plan entirely, opting instead to eat at their fraternities or eating houses, which all employ their own cooks. Here the food tends to be substantially better than at Commons or at the Union, but the selection is reduced.

Despite the limited number of places to eat on campus, most students feel that Commons and the Café do a good job of maintaining variety. Commons is popular for its salad bar, made-to-order sandwich bar, and pizza bar, as well as for the creations of Chester, the “Noodle-Man.” Breakfast here is also a favorite, with endless stacks of pancakes, bowls of fresh fruit, make-your-own waffles, and numerous cereal choices. The Union has also been trying to diversify its menu and give its dishes a gourmet touch, so students can now choose from fresh salmon sandwiches, deluxe burgers, and pasta specials. Still, because it is very much a monopoly on campus, the Café’s prices remain steep, making it hard to eat there on a regular basis without a meal plan. Additionally, many apparently basic items like V8 juice, granola bars, yogurt, and trail mix are not included in the meal plan and must be bought separately. By the time students are seniors, many stop eating college food altogether and save money by cooking in their apartments. Overall, most students try to appreciate the variety that exists given the relatively small number of students eating here.

Limited, but Good!

Campus dining options are limited, but still very good. Plus there are plenty of places to go off campus

Nearly Excellent, but for Eventual Lack of Variety.

My friends and I are big fans of Commons, the one and only true dining hall at Davidson College, which offers three meals a day on the freshman meal plan (including weekends!). Commons operates on a somewhat rotational schedule, so most of the meals show up for a day and don't come back for a little while, giving a fair amount of variety. It's easy to see how one could quickly tire of the meals here, though, and the Union has a stagnant menu that doesn't offer much in the way of vegetarian options.
