College Prowler Take

Given that about 95 percent of Davidson students live on campus all four years, dorm quality is a pretty important aspect of Davidson life to consider. Many of Davidson’s dorms have been renovated within the last several years. Upon seeing the Rich or Watts lounges, people often exclaim that “it looks like Pier One Imports in there!” and it is not infrequent to hear Duke described as “a palace” because of its luxurious amenities and nice rooms. There are sinks in most rooms (with the exception of the Sophomore Apartments), and several dorms that are not immediately next to the free laundry service have self-service laundry rooms in their basements in case students prefer to do their own laundry.

As for Davidson’s “worst” dorms… it’s all relative. The majority of Davidson’s accommodations make it difficult to complain with any true sincerity. Because Davidson has done such a great job keeping the dorms updated, the smallest rooms are large in comparison to those of many schools, and the dorms are generally well-maintained. These days, the most complaints stem from Little and Sentelle, as the bathrooms are not always the cleanest. Additionally, the Sophomore Apartments are a “love it or hate it” type deal; they are avoided by many due to their cramped space, loudness during weekends, and distance from the center of campus, but are sought after by others for their fun atmosphere and proximity to Patterson Court.

As upperclassmen, Davidson students are given many excellent dorm options. Some prefer the suite-style living of Tomlinson, others the fun theme hall atmosphere at Duke. As seniors, however, Davidson students are rewarded for three years of hard work with the college-operated senior apartments, which are more than spacious with private living rooms, kitchens and even porches. In general, Davidson dorms are excellent, and the cause for complaint is minimal. Anyone would be at home here.

Dorms on campus are generally...

Dorms on campus are generally fairly new and kept up well. Each summer, the college renovates a building on campus. In 2008, Davidson renovated Watts and Richardson dorms, both of which are freshmen dorms. Watts has very large rooms, brand new furniture, sinks in the rooms, new common rooms, flat-screen televisions, and new couches and tables in the common rooms. Other dorms might have smaller dorm rooms, but they have other positive aspects. For example, Belk dorm has smaller rooms, but more people on each hall, and therefore more friends live there together.

All the freshmen dorms are great....

All the freshmen dorms are great. Most have been recently renovated or are in the process. Belk is the 'urban center' of the freshmen dorms. Sophomore apartments are for the 'partiers' usually and are not as nice as the upperclassmen dorms up the hill (e.g., Tomlinson). Personally, I would live off campus senior year because the senior options are not my style.

The dorms aren't bad, but there's definitely a discrepancy in size. If you're in Belk, the rooms are really small and kind of awkwardly shaped, but the bathrooms are much nicer than those in other dorms. Also, every dorm has a sink which is really nice. Cannon and Watts are the biggest, and Richardson is pretty small but has awesome lounges. Belk has the worst lounges. Watts is definitely the ideal choice because it has the biggest rooms and nicest lounges.

Dorms are overall very good. Freshman get placed in varying ones year by year, but Cannon and Watts are great. Belk has the most people but smaller rooms. Freshman halls develop a lot of personality, and the people become very close. It's a really good experience.

Dorms are great! Belk has the best bathrooms, but Rich, Cannon, and Watts have the best common rooms. Belk has elevators, though. These are freshman dorms. Most all students live on campus all four years, and it's hard to get off campus housing.

  • Eco House: The Davidson College Ecological Cooperative was founded in 2007 as an alternative living space for students committed to living in community with one another and with conscientious awareness of the natural world. Eco-op gives ten students a chance to live lead environmentally conscious lives while closely working with their faculty advisors. The Eco House is its own building, separate from other residence halls. Major goals of the Eco-op residents include improving energy conservation and increasing the amount of local food in their meals. Living in the Eco-House is a substantial extracurricular commitment; it is not just a residence. Eco-House residents must be able to commit to daily and weekly activities such as cooking, cleaning, house meetings, internal and external programming and events, and continuing education.
  • Substance-Free Housing: Students may opt to live on Substance-Free (“Sub-Free”) halls at Davidson. These halls are located within the regular residence halls; however, every member of the hall must sign a written agreement at the beginning of the year that they will not bring alcohol or cigarettes onto their halls, and they will not return to their halls inebriated. Essentially these halls are ideal for students who either do not want to drink and do not want to be around people who do, or else those who just are not big on the party scene. Generally these halls contain people who prefer a quiet living/studying environment.
  • Theme Halls: Every year there are several theme halls located in the Duke Residence Hall. According to Davidson’s website, you can “live with students who share your interest in a region or an issue; organize special activities related to your shared interests; enjoy regular, small-group interaction with a faculty advisor, campus guests, and the Dean Rusk Program staff; and shape the calendar of events that the Dean Rusk Program organizes for the Davidson community.” An added perk is the 24/7 access to the Duke kitchen and the International Studies Lounge, which receives satellite broadcasts from around the world.

Did You Know?

Davidson tries to renovate a dorm every summer. Cannon is slated for renovation in the summer of 2009, Rich and Watts were updated in 2008, and Duke was renovated in 2007. Most dorms have been renovated within the last few years.

All dorms on campus are equipped with air-conditioning and heat, and most have in-room sinks.

Davidson has a free laundry service. Drop your clothes off in a laundry bag, and two days later they are cleaned, folded, and ready to pick up. Nice clothes and Polos are even cleaned separately! Linens are also provided and cleaned free of charge by the college laundry.

Davidson assigns rooms by giving each student a random lottery number. In this system, upcoming seniors have the best lottery numbers (1-500), followed by juniors (501-1000), then sophomores (1001-1500). If you’re lucky enough to get a good number, then you have the keys to the best rooms on campus!
