College Prowler Take
The reality of the situation is very much “don’t ask, don’t tell.” In fact, the police chief told the freshmen at the beginning of the year that the cops “assume” your Solo cup is full of soda, unless you give them reason to believe otherwise. While campus police are more than prompt to respond to blatant drug use or vandalism, they won’t interrogate drunken students just because they suspect they’re underage. As long as you say hello to the officers as you pass by and make it clear that you are safe and healthy, the campus police will generally leave you alone, even if you’re carrying a Solo cup. This is not the case with alcohol containers (bottles, cans, etc); walking around with one of these would be asking to get in trouble. To incoming freshman: It would not be a good idea to test out the Solo cup idea on, before, or immediately following First Night Down (the first night freshmen are officially permitted to be down the hill). The cops want to prove a point at the beginning of the year, and they crack down a lot harder than they do the rest of the year. Hall counselors and RAs are authorized to give out alcohol citations, but virtually never enter students’ rooms if the door is closed—even if they suspect underage drinking inside. In most cases, if the RA didn’t see it, then it didn’t happen. Overall, the authorities on campus are here to look out for students, not bust them, and they try to be as understanding as they can given the tough position they’re in. The police can be more lenient here simply because they know that drinking and driving is not an issue at Davidson. Still, they’re not going to let you get away with everything.

The police on campus are more...
The police on campus are more worried about your safety than your life choices. If you drink, that is definitely not a problem on campus, and if you don't drink in high school, you'll probably start when you come to Davidson. The school has a red cup policy, so if your drink is in a red cup, you will not be in trouble. Don't carry around beer cans; pour it into a cup, and you'll be fine. The school is definitely more strict about drugs on campus. If you are caught with drugs, you will be put on social probation and get in trouble. Alcohol is the drug of choice for most students on campus, however, so that's not normally a problem. Just be honest with the cops if they ask you if you're underage. It's an honor code violation if you lie, and then you're in serious trouble.

Compared to other schools, the police here are not strict at all. The main thing they care about is students using common sense. Don’t run around shouting and holding a beer can if you’re under 21. Don’t pass out on the floor of a party. Don’t get so drunk that you throw up all over the lawn of a fraternity house. The campus police care about keeping us safe, but they understand that we want to have a good time. |

I believe that Davidson handles alcohol in the best way that it can. Davidson realizes that underage drinking goes on in college—it is a problem everywhere. The best thing Davidson can do is try to make sure that the drinking stays on campus. Drinking and driving is not a problem on campus. Police are present at some parties, but their job is not to look inside everybody’s cup and see what he or she is drinking. Instead, they make sure that people are not hurting themselves or damaging property. |

It depends on who you ask as to whether or not the cops are considered strict about drinking. On Patterson Court and in the frat and eating houses, cops watch over parties and will disrupt any situation in which they witness an upperclassman giving beer to any underage students. In the dorms, stopping underage drinking is placed in the hands of the resident advisors and hall counselors. However, most can avoid these watchful eyes by simply closing room doors while drinking. Cops take drugs even more seriously and, since I’ve not heard about really hard drugs on campus, the cops seem to be successful in limiting drug use. |

The police have become stricter in...
The police have become stricter in the past few years with the arrival of a new campus security chief. Drinking offenses, more often than not, get a slap on the wrist, although punishment increases for every citation you receive (from a fine at the beginning to mandatory counseling). Drugs are much more serious and involve local police, not just campus security. |
