Best Time to Look for a Place
Availability usually has less do to with when you look and more with how long you’re willing to rent. While there are plenty of openings year round, many renters are not interested unless you can commit to at least six months.

College Prowler Take
Finding off-campus housing is simply not as big of an issue at Davidson as at other schools, as over 90% of students remain on campus all four years, and college housing is guaranteed the entire time to any student who wants it. Still, a number of upperclassmen will seek off-campus permission each semester, usually to save money, have more living space, or simply escape campus. Some students warn that moving off campus often causes students to lose social contact with all the “happenings” at Davidson. For some this is a big problem, while others couldn’t care less. Because off-campus living is never a consideration for the majority of Davidson students, many just assume there aren’t many good options out there. Those that actually look for housing wind up finding plenty of possibilities, however, and virtually all of them are less expensive than on-campus, college-owned apartments. In addition, the area surrounding Davidson is currently experiencing a building boom, and apartments are becoming easier and easier to find. The Depot Apartments are a perennial favorite. A whole new neighborhood of houses with one-bedroom units over the garages recently opened off Concord Road, just minutes from campus, and many of these units have already been leased to college students. So far, there haven’t been too many noise complaints.

A few guys I know who graduated...
A few guys I know who graduated early and now work on campus had no trouble at all finding a place nearby this semester. Although Residence Life didn’t help them out too much, they wound up asking the pastor at the College Presbyterian Church to ask around in the congregation and found a great arrangement through that—and for really cheap. Their landlady even offered to pay for their utilities and cable. That’s how things are around here. |

My boyfriend had to live off...
My boyfriend had to live off campus last semester due to the housing shortage caused by the large freshman class. While only paying for a single room, he lived in a two story house with a full kitchen, dining room, and living room. It was so close to campus that he didn’t have to get up any earlier to get to class than he had in previous semesters. The only drawbacks that I noticed were that he was no longer as informed of campus activities as those of us who lived on campus. I would always choose to live on campus simply because the campus has a very homey, residential feel. I feel more included living on campus. |

Off-campus housing doesn’t seem to...
Off-campus housing doesn’t seem to be too much of an inconvenience. The distance from houses to campus is not much more than the walk would be from a dorm to a classroom at a larger university. Also, community bikes are available to students for quicker transportation. |

Housing is usually a good walk, bike ride, or—in some cases—car ride to campus. |

Davidson guarantees on-campus...
Davidson guarantees on-campus housing for all four years, but some students live off campus. There are a few different apartment complexes and houses for rent within walking distance. Most students who live off campus enjoy it, but on-campus housing is much more convenient. |
