The College accesses the Internet via satellite. The downlink connection operates at near-DSL speeds; uploads are considerably slower. Satellite providers also employ "fair access policies," which limit the bandwidth available to their users to ensure that no one client abuses the privilege of Internet access. The faculty, staff, and students each have separate satellite accounts to ensure that they stay within the limits of their fair access policies. Faculty and staff have the option to access their networks via wireless connections that cover the residential areas of campus, but students prefer wired connections to avoid taxing their tenuous connection through overuse brought on by ease of access (of the three fair access policies, the students' affords the least daily bandwidth).
Most of the people living on campus have their own computers, but the College recognizes the need to stay abreast of events outside of the valley, and there is a computer lab available to the entire community. During crunch times for papers, this lab can fill up, but students always manage to find ample time to complete their papers. Tech-savvy students provide computer support and keep the networks operating smoothly.
