The students say it best. Athletics are fun, but they are not a big deal on Denison's campus. Denison is a Division III school, and admittance into sporting events is free to Denison students. It's true that Denison boasts an excellent swim team that is nationally ranked, but most students have never watched the swim team compete. A few more students go to the rugby games, but while varsity sports are important to the athletes playing them, they are not a driving force on campus. Intramurals are probably bigger than varsity sports, but they are nowhere near as competitive. People involved in IMs are mostly involved to stay in shape in between classes and homework. Soccer is popular, both as an IM and as a (more competitive) club sport. Martial arts are also popular as club sports. If you are looking for a big football or basketball program, then Denison is not for you. Overall, athletics are secondary to academics. People involved in them will do their best, as it seems they do with academics, but sports do not dominate the social scene. They are considered a fun pastime for those who are interested, and they're relatively ignored by those who are not.
