School Nickname Go Big Red! Denison University doesn’t really have a school mascot. Someone dresses up as a buzzard for football games, but students joke affectionately that Denison’s mascot is a stick of gum.

Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The students say it best. Athletics are fun, but they are not a big deal on Denison’s campus. Denison is a Division III school, and admittance into sporting events is free to Denison’s students. It’s true that Denison has excellent rugby and swimming teams, but most students have never watched the swim team compete. A few more students go to the rugby games, but while varsity sports are important to the athletes playing them (Denison has won the All Sports trophy for several years), they are not a driving force on campus. IMs are probably bigger than varsity sports, but they are nowhere near as competitive. People involved in IMs are mostly involved to stay in shape between classes and homework. Soccer is popular, both as an IM and as a (more competitive) club sport. Martial arts are also popular as club sports.

If you are looking for a big football or basketball program, then Denison is not for you. Overall, athletics are secondary to academics. People involved in them will do their best, as it seems they do with academics, but sports do not dominate the social scene. They are considered a fun pastime for those who are interested, and they’re relatively ignored by those who are not.

Ehhh...

We have a good lacrosse, field hockey, and swimming team but we're still a D-3 school. We have absolutely NO school pride - even for our good sports. Our athletic facilities are okay, but the gym closes at 9 and the swimming pool isn't open on the weekends. Overall, I'm displeased with DU athletics.

National Champs.

Our swim team won the national championship this year, making us the #1 D3 team. Besides swimming, our lacrosse teams are excellent, as is our women's basketball team. Our only really pathetic team is baseball. Sorry guys. Sporting events are a huge deal, but there's always support from the entire campus, nonetheless.

Could It Be Better? Certainly.

Sportswomen/men are at the topmost rungs of the ladder of the college community but actual attendance at sports events are dismally low. The school sometimes even goes out of its way to provide the students with the best athletic and training facilities. Surprisingly, the school spirit is not one to be raised a finger at for it is noteworthy.

Most Popular Sports

The most popular sport is probably soccer. Football is not very popular at Denison because the team’s record is usually less than spectacular.

Getting Tickets

Because of Denison’s small size, it is very easy to get tickets to games. Sporting events are free for students, so it isn’t expensive to be a spectator.
