Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Campus dining is adequate, but there are problems with it. You won’t starve at Denison, but if you come to campus expecting gourmet food, you will definitely be disappointed. The dining halls try to offer a variety of foods to satiate everyone’s appetite—hence, the salad bar and the vegetarian line. Still, as hard as the dining halls work, most students find that by the end of the first semester, they are constantly eating the same mediocre food every day. There are good things about dining on campus, however. First of all, it’s convenient. There are two dining halls on campus: Curtis Dining Hall on West Quad and Huffman Dining Hall on East Quad. Both are all-you-can-eat dining halls. Moreover, Denison has three different meal plans. Plan A is what freshmen are automatically put on (although they can switch.) This is the unlimited meal plan. It’s great for people who aren’t sure of their own eating habits. Plan B allows for two meals per day and gives you 110 Flex Dollars. Flex Dollars can be used to buy food at the Slayter Store, Taco Bell and Pizza Hut, and in the dining halls if you run out of meals. Plan C is similar, giving you one meal a day and 250 Flex Dollars. If you run out of meals and want to add more to your meal plan, they can be bought in increments of 25. It isn’t difficult to find food.

Another good point to eating in the dining halls is that it’s such a social experience. With the combination of only two dining halls and the fact that most students on campus are required to be on the meal plans, everyone is in the dining hall at some point in the day. It’s not uncommon to run into friends you don’t see very often just by popping in for a quick dinner—or a quick bagel, as the case may be.

Campus Dining Is Kind of a Downer...

The ONLY thing I don't like about Denison is the food. The food is edible, but isn't very good most of the time. However, I LOVE the atmosphere at the Dining Halls because the cafeteria staff and students mingle well together, you get a sense of "family" away from home!

Pretty Bad.

The food here is actually quite unacceptable, especially given the money we pay. I feel like it is very difficult for me to be healthy without spending a ton of additional money aside from what we already spend on the required meal plan. Very few options, very poor quality, and the dining halls themselves are nothing special. It gets as bad as pouring sour milk onto your cereal in the morning. Atleast the staff is friendly...

Awful

The dining halls are awful. Some of the workers are nice...can't say the same about the food: redundant, bad taste, leaves you feeling either unfulfilled or sick to your stomach, no fresh fruit, etc. Slayter Union says it has food...but I have personally got food poisoning twice from food that I didn't even enjoy eating in the first place and every food item they sell tastes like a knock-off version of mediocre food establishments. And P.S. if you think off-campus dining will make up for the horrible food on campus, sorry to disappoint but Granville food doesn't leave you with many choices.

Special Options Meal exchange is another option. Each night of the week, students can go to the Slayter Pit and exchange one meal in the dining hall for one in the Pit. Each day offers a different choice of dinner, from pizza and burgers to sandwiches and salad. There is a choice from both Taco Bell and Pizza Hut, as well. Right next to the Pit there is a small store where students can buy snack foods and such. A third option is upstairs where a vegetarian wrap can be purchased, although this one is harder to catch due to its limited hours.
Did You Know?

Students who are lucky enough to live in the apartments can get off the meal plan and cook their own food.

Curtis and Huffman Dining Halls offer late-night dinners on Thursday from 10 p.m. to 11 p.m.
