Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Essentially everyone is required to live on campus at Denison. Because of this, a lot of students complain about the lack of available senior apartments. However, requiring everyone to live on campus creates a real sense of community here, which is especially important for freshmen. All first-years are housed in first-year-only halls. This is nice because it immerses students in a social atmosphere immediately, and most students feel that dorm life helps them to adjust to Denison. In fact, most students in first-year dorms develop a strong loyalty to whatever dorm they lived in. Shorney, one of the first-year dorms on West Quad, is well known for being a party dorm, and while students who don’t live there want to avoid it, those who live there swear by it. The campus apartments are available to seniors only, and many seniors fight over them during the lottery at the end of junior year. Other popular places to live are Curtis East for sophomores and Huffman for juniors. Simple advice most students give is this: avoid Shorney and Crawford.

The dorms are well-furnished and spacious enough, the bathrooms are sufficient, and the beds really aren’t that uncomfortable. The most difficult part of the dorm sleeping situation is getting used to the fact that most students loft their beds. Still, the ceilings are high enough that you won’t have to worry too much about hitting your head. Denison has some really unique living opportunities as well. Students at the Homestead, for example, live an environmentally friendly lifestyle in student-built houses with no electricity and grow most of their own food. Other options include the Language and Culture dorm for freshmen and any of the satellite houses. Even though campus housing can be somewhat crowded, it’s also a very integral part of Denison life.

Housing Is Adaquate

Since Denison is a residential college, all students live on campus. First year dorms are nice in comparison to other colleges I've visited - Lots of built in storage, furniture in good condition, etc.

Housing

Freshmen dorms aren't that great, they're tight on space and bathrooms are for everyone on the floor. However, the fact that everyone lives on campus facilitates making friends. Security can also be annoying. Sophomore housing is similar but it's less strict unless you're lucky and get a good lottery number. In that case, you can chose Sawyer, Beaver or Shep which are 6mens or quads with their own bathrooms. Seniors get apartments.

You Can't Live Off Campus

Most of the dorms are pretty nice and in good condition. The only downside is not being able to live off campus. Denison has chosen to make class sizes bigger which means more competition when it comes to housing. DU works on a random lottery system so where you live is based on luck. You can only hope that you will get an apartment senior year with a kitchen, if you aren't so lucky, you'll spend your 4 years at Denison in a dorm.
