Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Diversity is not one of Denison’s strong points. There are not a large amount of minorities on campus. Black students tend to hang out with black students, Indians with Indians, and white students with white students. If students use the approach of surrounding themselves with others of a particular race, it may feel like there are more minorities present than there actually are. If you want to meet people, you can find them, but you generally need to join a group like DISA to do so. It’s not impossible to expand your worldview at Denison, but you may need to work at it. Denison has recently been trying to foster a more diverse environment, but it may take a few more years before they are successful.

The lack of diversity doesn’t mean that people are intolerant. In fact, Denison students have an amazing amount of respect for each other, despite social, racial, and cultural differences. There are several clubs and organizations for minorities. And homosexual students are not pressured to conform or to stay in the closet because of their personal choices. Still, at the same time, student responses to diversity issues seem, at best, mixed and half-hearted. Some students are really active and engaged toward creating a sense of diversity, but others feel it is not a serious problem that students of different races do not socialize with one another.

Denison Tries

The campus is mainly white and rich, but there are pockets of different races and economic classes. The university tries very hard to reach out to all types of groups from gender to ethnicity to religion to sexual orientation. Organizations promote open dialogue when it comes to diversity and challenges certain groups may face.

Somewhat Diverse

There is enough diversity that is visible in terms of race, but white people far outnumber everyone else. In terms of fashion, most people dress the same. Not a lot of different tastes on campus.

Clubs/Organizations Promote Diversity

Although the majority of the student population is white, the numerous clubs and organizations on campus promote diversity and acceptance of all races, religions, sexual orientations, etc. Outlook, the LGBTQIA club is very active, as are the Denison Feminists, Asian Culture Club, Black Student Union, Hillel, etc. Options for everyone.

Facts

Gay Pride

There are several gay organizations on campus, such as Outlook and SafeZone. But for the most part, the organizations are quiet, and the gay scene blends into the rest of campus.

Political Activity

There are usually no political protests on Denison's campus, but politics definitely play a role in defining Denison's atmosphere. This can be seen in the schedule of speakers (i.e. Republicans bring someone in, Democrats respond) and in the Bullsheet, a student publication. The campus boasts a mix of conservatives and liberals.

Economic Status

A lot of people complain about the rich kids on campus. And most of the students at Denison do come from economically well-off backgrounds. However, there are students at Denison from all kinds of economic backgrounds.

Most Common Religions

Christianity is really popular at Denison. This is due, in no small part, to the fact that Denison is a historically Christian university (even though all official links with the religion have been cut). There are several groups and activities, such as Denison Hillel (a Jewish student organization) and the Buddhist Meditation Group, which focuses on non-Christian religions. The University is working on creating an accepting and spiritually-tolerant campus.

Minority Clubs on Campus

There are a number of minority clubs on campus, most notably La Fuerza Latina and DISA, the Denison International Student Association. Both DISA and La Fuerza Latina host events throughout the year, such as the DISA Formal Dance or Fashion Show. Denison also boasts a Black Student Union, although this group is very quiet. A lot of students are unaware of most of the minority clubs.
