Alcohol is pretty standard, but not a large portion of the campus does drugs.

The drug scene is not very big at Denison University, it really depends on the group of people that you hang out with. There is not any kind of peer pressure, if you do not want to participate in the drugs, people will not be mad at you. The more popular scene is the alcohol. It's very commonly found at just about every party.

Partying is very prevalent on Denison's campus, most likely because it's located in a small town so it seems like there is nothing else to do on weekends. However, I don't feel students are pressured into drinking if they do not want to. There is some drug use too, but it is not very visible. This past year, parties were required to be registered - the names of the people hosting the party, who the sober party-goers would be, when the party would be, and an agreement that snacks and water would be available. The administration is really trying to help students be smarter and safer about partying.

Like with Greek life, even though the majority of Denison students (claim that they) don't drink, alcohol is a huge influence on the party and social scene. You can get alcohol almost anywhere on campus, and most RAs are willing to overlook alcohol, even in a freshman dorm (i.e. as long as it's hidden they don't care). Most Saturdays and Sundays, depending on where you live, there will be physical evidence (bottles, beer cans) of parties that had happened the night before. The past year (2012-2013), we had more hospital transports in the first semester (something like 21 in the first few months) than in the 2011-2012 school year all together. There is also what is called a Medical Amnesty Policy where, as long as you call security for yourself, you can receive medical attention without academic consequences (although they write your parents and make you go through a class thing). As far as drugs go, I've only ever heard of people smoking pot, but I'm sure that more goes on. I'm sure that the administration is trying to enforce policies more, but they could definitely do better. At least they've had enough motivation too lately.

There are several programs that go on throughout the year, many of which mention drugs, most of which are about sex and alcohol and any combination of the above. Incoming students must participate in an online program about drugs and their harmful effects.
Sorry, there are no reviews.
