Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Denison is an aesthetically pleasing campus, with lots of green on the quads and immense brick buildings. But the appearance of the buildings is not merely a façade—the facilities at Denison are in good condition. The effort to keep facilities in good condition, however, results in a lot of construction on campus. Most students find it easy to forgive the construction in exchange for both the entertainment and the convenience the facilities provide. There are two newer buildings: the Samson Talbot Hall of Biological Science, dedicated in 2004, and Burton Morgan, a center for many of the administrative offices, dedicated in 2003. Buildings such as these two have helped to create space for the academic departments to grow.

Mitchell Recreation Center, another of the newer buildings on campus, houses the gym. All of the equipment is in top condition, and students, as well as town residents, are drawn in to work out. The computer labs are well-kept—it’s a rare thing to see a computer out of order. The student union was recently remodeled so that it is more space effective, although it still has a more functional than recreational feel. It serves its purpose very well—it just does so with an administrative flair. The Bandersnatch coffeehouse (one of the focal points of East Quad life) by no means feels entirely new, but it has charm. It’s a nice place to chill with friends, maybe attempt to do homework, and definitely have a good time.

Library

The library is a great place to go for anything from group work to intense solitary studying. There are floors that differ in level of noise allowed, tons of librarians and student research assistants to help out, and even a Consort connected to other Ohio schools in order to obtain books the Denison library might not have at the time.

Readily Available

The open hours for the athletic center and library are pretty flexible for the general student body. There are always things to do on campus, and the student center is open almost all the time.

Historic but up-To-Date

Denison's building are beautiful and historic, but they have renovated them nicely on the inside to boast top of the line modern necessities. Slayter, the student union, is a fun hang out in between classes or for dinner or studying. It's not the prettiest building on campus, but there's always people in it, so you always end up running into someone there. Part of the athletic center is under construction for a new pool (for our Sate Champions Swim TEAM!), but it is still open and all of the facilities on the athletic center are still running. Lots of squash/racquetball courts, as well as two different work out rooms, packed with great machines, and there is usually at least one machine per room open. The library is great, and if students aren't studying in empty classrooms on campus, then they're in the library. More times than not you will end up seeing someone you know on the second floor of the library, which is kind of fun. Both Macs and PCs are available to students in the library and most, if not all, floors.

Facts

Favorite Things To Do

There are lots of things to do on campus, especially at night. The student union is host to concerts, comedians, and plenty of activities put on by student organizations. Swasey Chapel or the Mitchell Center house the larger venues Denison brings to campus. For something more low-key, the Denison Film Society shows movies on several nights of the week. The plays at Ace Morgan Theater generally draw large crowds, as well. The Bandersnatch coffeehouse has board games students can play if they wish, and every Thursday and Sunday night student bands play. There are also guest speakers almost every day of the week. Students never lack things to do.

There is almost always something to do on campus. In between classes, students can grab a bite to eat and watch television in Slayter Hall or work out in the athletic center.
