Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Greek life is not oppressive at Denison, but it is fairly strong. What keeps the Greeks from being a suffocating influence on campus is the fact that they do not live together in their houses, as Denison decided that it wanted to get rid of the party-school image. Some of their traditions, such as driving around honking their horns to celebrate recruitment, can be annoying, but they are not constant happenings on campus.

Both guys and girls will show a proud allegiance to their house. Roughly half of the campus is Greek, and nightlife reflects this. There is not a lot of pressure on non-Greek students to join, but it will be demanding for those in the system. While joining a frat or a sorority may not be a necessity for having a good time, the social scene is intensely Greek, and some people who are not Greek may find themselves bored on a Saturday night. Most of the big parties on campus are Greek events, and they have parties multiple times during the week. Sororities, especially, will organize many campus events, such as Delta Gamma’s Anchor Splash. Overall, whether or not you choose to get involved in Greek life, the amount of attention you pay to the Greeks is up to you.

Greek and Love It

From the perspective of a Greek member, it seems as though Greek organizations dominate the social scene. Many on and off campus parties are hosted by Greeks. Greek members are also super involved in other areas of campus so our visibility is pretty widespread. There is no Greek housing, so it isn't as exclusive as it might be at other schools. Also, the administration seems to dislike the Greek organizations and they are making everything more difficult for us. While I believe Greek life is a great way to get more involved and provides a lot of social outlets, non-Greeks say that you can still have a social life and be an independent.

Going Greek? It Shouldn't Be a Burden.

Most people on campus would like to believe for the sake of passing on mere gossip that Greek life commands the social hierarchy of the school. That isn't true. They enjoy themselves without bothering other people and not many untoward incidents are reported. People who do not wish to join fraternities/sororities have a whale of a time too. I've been there and I know it well.

Not a Necessity, but an Option

Greek life is great for people who want to participate in that sort of thing, but if it's not for you, you can still have a social life, and there are many other options to keep you occupied.

Did You Know?

The Greeks do not live in their houses. Frat row has been turned into regular dormitory housing. This was done to negate Denison’s reputation as a party school.
