Quick Stats

School Slang
  • The Commons: The campus commons behind Slayter Hall.
  • Doane: Doane Administration Building.
  • Shep: Shepardson Hall.
  • Slayter: Slayter Hall, the Student Union.
  • The Snatch: Bandersnatch Coffeehouse.
Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • Buy something with Denison insignia on it. Almost everyone owns something.
  • Don’t wear your keys on a lanyard. It’ll give you away as a freshman.
  • Go to parties the first week of school. Even if you don’t drink, you’ll meet plenty of people. Just be cautious; if you are under 21 and at a party that gets busted, you will get an alcohol violation.
  • Going to June orientation is a must.
  • Nothing is more useful than proper time management.
  • Orientation activities aren’t always fun, but you should do them anyway.
  • The workload is tough. Books are heavy.
Tips to Succeed
  • Check your e-mail at least two times a day.
  • Dispute any bad grades you get.
  • Do your homework, and do it on time. All-nighters really aren’t fun.
  • Don’t expect Denison to be like high school. You will need to go to class.
  • Necessity is the mother of invention. When absolutely nothing looks appealing at the dining hall, mix and match. Grab a bagel, some pasta sauce, and some cheese, voila! Pizza.
  • Pick classes you like; you’ll be more likely to pay attention that way.
  • Talk to your professors. Not only will you probably get better grades, but you’ll find out that professors are pretty cool people.

Denison Community Association (DCA)

DCA is a great way to get involved with community service at Denison and in the surrounding communities. There are tons of different organizations that allow you to help others in a way that interests you, ranging from Big Brothers Big Sisters, to Drama programs, to Legal Service, to Habitat for Humanity, to off campus service trips. Also, if you find another organization that interests you, feel free to start it up!

A Comfortable, Fun Place

Denison is a fantastic middle ground on almost every issue. It's easy to find anything you want - there are a ton of activities, the party scene is available but not necessary, classes are challenging but not too hard. It's a build it yourself experience, in the best possible way.

It was one of the first schools to take on a Women's Studies, Black Studies, and International Studies programs. it is constantly building or renovating a building on campus. It offers a lot to do on cmapus, which is all free (and should be because it costs so much). The Denison Internship Catalog and organization fair along with Off campus study fair is pretty amazing because it helps students utilize what is available to them.

Facts

Traditions
  • Anchor Splash: Anchor Splash is a yearly event put on by Delta Gamma sorority. All of the fraternities and sororities compete in a week-long series of events culminating in a synchronized swimming competition.
  • Culture Jam: Every year, a group of student organizations put on a concert in the Mitchell Center. The concert features R&B music and is usually a pretty big hit with most students.
  • D-Day: D-Day is a concert Denison holds every year. Students can go for free and bring one or two guests for a reduced price. One year, D-Day featured Third Eye Blind, but the event often hosts local acts, as well.
  • One-Act Festival: Every year, Denison puts on a one-act festival, a production of student-written one-act plays. All students are invited to submit scripts to the contest, and the winners are turned into productions.
  • School Spirit: Students are generally proud of being Denison students, but school spirit is not terribly strong. Most people own sweaters or shirts with Denison insignia, but overall, the spirit of Big Red isn’t overwhelming.
  • Serenades: The serenades are another Greek tradition that draws plenty of non-Greek students out to East Quad. Fraternities and sororities will sing to each other in celebration of events like engagements.
Urban Legends
  • Beta House on North Quad is haunted.
  • The basement girls’ bathroom in Curtis West is haunted.
  • The seventh floor of the library is haunted.
