Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Granville is not a typical college town. There are no clubs for students to frequent, and while there are coffee shops, a lot of things in town close early. Five o’clock is when most businesses shut down for the day. The local atmosphere is, in a word, quiet. Denison University is not in an urban setting, so students looking for the excitement of big-city life won’t find it here. Some say that the quietness makes the area boring, but sometimes the stillness of Granville is Denison’s greatest asset. It provides a safe atmosphere and is a great place to walk in the evenings.

If you need city excitement, though, it is around. Some students hang out in Columbus around Ohio State University. There are plenty of clubs and concerts in Columbus. The Gallery Hop draws many students during the year, and High Street is always a fun place to walk around. The important thing about local atmosphere is this—no matter where you are, you will find something to surprise you. The cultural aspects of Granville are not the same as in a larger city like Chicago or New York, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t there. You may not be able to find a renowned art gallery in Granville, or even Newark or Heath, but you can explore the Indian mounds, some of which have fascinating stories behind them. The key to enjoying a small town is to explore the area and discover any secrets that it’s hiding.

Cute If Somewhat Dull Town

Granville is a beautiful with small town charm. It's very safe, but can also be dull because of how small it is. However, Columbus and Easton are fairly close so when we need more to do, we go there.

Nostalgia in the Now

Granville is a town with an old soul. There are local shops everywhere that everyone goes to such as a high-brow thrift store that turns out to not be an oxymoron, a small store specializing in baby items, and of course the local ice cream shop. Everyone is eerily polite and perfect-looking. It is a town that seems to have maintained the same feel for decades; walking down mainstreet looks and feels like a movie set in the 1950s.

On Campus Only

If you're under 21, on-camups is your only option. Over 21 there is one bar in town (Brews, Too). Girls can get into pretty much every party on campus (other than closed greek-life mixers) but guys may have a harder time if not affiliated with the fraternity or sports team hosting the party. Parties are held in suite rooms and apartments on campus.
