Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Denison University is a residential campus—that means the administration wants you on campus all four years. The entire student housing hierarchy (upperclassmen always live in certain dorms, underclassmen in others) is built on this system. That doesn’t mean that people never live off campus, but the number of students who do is so inconsequential that most people brush off-campus housing off as something that never happens. Married students living with spouses, single parents, students that are 25 years of age or older, and students living with their parents within 25 miles of campus are exempt from the housing requirement. According to policy, depending on projected enrollment and housing capacity, a limited number of seniors are sometimes allowed to live off campus as determined through an off-campus lottery. If you have exceptional reasons, and have a petition endorsed by either the Health and Counseling Center or Academic Support Services, you may be able to petition your way off campus, but it’s really uncommon.

Housing on campus gets better every year, and furthermore, being on campus allows students to be more social and to participate in more extracurricular activities. Let’s face it—if you’re living off campus and realize after you get home that there is a meeting in 15 minutes that you forgot about, you aren’t as likely to go as students who realize that they have 15 minutes to walk from their dorm to Slayter Hall.

No Campus Housing ROCKS!

I love how Denison doesn't allow off-campus housing - it gives the campus a community-feel. I got to know lots of seniors and juniors as a first-year, which is really awesome. Parties are also accessible because the upperclassmen live on-campus. Overall, the banning of off-campus housing at Denison is one of the main reasons why Denison is such a fun place to mingle.

I Love That There's No Off-Campus Housing!!

There really isn't off-campus housing at Denison, but I would not want it any other way! I love that everyone lives on campus all 4 years. It really makes the campus seem more together and unified. It's easy because you're close to most of your friends and you don't have to go through any of the hassle of finding an apartment or anything.

However, if you absolutely want to be away from campus, there are a couple of dorms at the bottom of the hill that kind of seem off-campus.
