There is a reason why DePaul students have been voted the happiest college students—they are given a more "real-world" experience, while going to school in a prime spot of Chicago. Freshman move-in day at DePaul doesn't include driving to some campus tucked away in the forest where shopping sprees at Walmart are the highlight of the week. Students here really discover what it's like to live on their own in a big city, and they are given an independence that most college students don't get right away. However, this type of environment is definitely not for everyone, and there is a definite “culture-shock” aspect that goes beyond that of the general college-transitional period.
DePaul students represent the University well by maintaining their diverse beliefs, while keeping an open mind; living the Vincentian model by becoming socially responsible leaders; and striving for academic excellence and lifelong learning. At the end of the day, for better or for worse, most students will stand by their love of the University and its many quirks. DePaul definitely has a heart and a spirit that transcends “college” and becomes applicable to life beyond the time a student will spend within the University's walls.
