Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

In an urban setting with so much going on, DePaul students don't usually make going to athletic events their first priority on the weekend. The Blue Crew, a student fan club at DePaul, holds a lot of different events on campus and gives away free things during games, but school spirit tends to be much lower than it would be at a more traditional university. A main issue is that men’s basketball, the most popular sport, doesn't play its home games on campus or anywhere reachable via CTA. The lack of school spirit is exacerbated by the fact that a large part of DePaul's basketball season takes place during the University's six-week-long winter break between Thanksgiving and New Year. The Blue Crew provides student fan buses that travel to and from Allstate Arena, but it takes a little advanced planning. It is free for students to go to all home athletic events and a discount rate is offered for guests. The women's team, which plays on campus at McGrath Arena, usually draws in a bigger crowd of students and locals.

Sporting events other than basketball are held in Lincoln Park, but are not very well advertised on campus, so most of these games are not well attended. Most student support is directed toward Chicago’s professional teams or the teams of the major surrounding cities. But, if you are dying to catch a DePaul game, most of the local bars are great about showing the games on television, and this atmosphere is generally a lot more fun. Plus, you'll encounter more fans in your age bracket than you will at the actual games.

Not Too Many Teams

I do not know too much about the sports, but I hear that we are not very good. We do not have a football team.

Lack of Spirit

DePaul is definitely more well known for their business school then their sports. Not having a football or mens baseball team makes it really hard to have any school spirit or even drive people out to any games. The mens basketball games are played out in the suburbs which is like an hour bus ride. The school spirit is something that would be nice to have around DePaul.

School Spirit

While students don’t often go out of their way to attend sporting events dressed in school colors while carrying large, blue foam fingers, DePaul students have a lot of spirit. However, this spirit is more often directed toward the volunteerism, social activism, and advocacy. The spirit of DePaul is based on the values of Saint Vincent and those values are celebrated often on campus. The Vincentian commitment to the poor is apparent throughout campus and the surrounding communities, and students aren’t afraid to represent that mission. The spirit of DePaul is based on the values of Saint Vincent and those values are celebrated often on campus.

Getting Tickets

Student pay an athletic fee each year, which allows them to get free tickets. Students can get tickets through DePaul’s website, but if the team is having a good year or if there's a big game, most tickets are reserved early in the year by alumni. Definitely buy your ticket for the DePaul-Marquette men's basketball game before the season even starts, if you can.

Best Place to Take a Walk

The lakefront, through Lincoln Park Zoo, Oz Park, or along Armitage Avenue.

Did You Know? The gym, commonly referred to as "The Ray," was named after legendary DePaul basketball coach Ray Meyer. A mural at the entranceway is an appreciation of his memory.
