Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

More often than not, the strictness of DePaul’s administration tends to revolve around financial issues. For example, students are more likely to get punished for dropping a class four seconds after the deadline than drinking tequila in their dorm room, mainly because the former causes DePaul to lose money from student refunds, and the latter does not. However, when it comes to getting caught with alcohol, the administration is pretty fair and usually willing to engage in a dialogue with a student before handing down a punishment. The three-strike dorm policy, which basically means students are allowed three violations before they are kicked out of University housing, is pretty lenient. Plus, it gives students the chance to make some mistakes while outgrowing the “college-is-a-constant-party” mentality.

One of the biggest pains about DePaul is dealing with the strict housing cancellation policy. On-campus housing is due in March and financial aid awards aren't sent out until the middle of May, so if cutting housing seems like the best area to adjust your budget once financial aid is released, just be aware that cancelling housing will lead to a $1,000 fine. And if you cancel during the academic year, it may lead to a $1,500 fine or the remaining balance of your room and board agreement. DePaul takes this policy very seriously, and it is almost impossible to cancel without being charged a fee. The University also emphasizes academic integrity to the fullest. Most professors take cheating and plagiarizing very seriously, which is great for students who are actually enrolled in a course for a challenging and competitive scholarly atmosphere. But, overall, DePaul’s administration is pretty fair, and, for the most part, stays pretty removed from students’ personal recreational choices.

Flexibility Is Key

The classes are very chill and the overall environment is very inviting. It is a pretty open community where the students are expected to do their best and be themselves. Most classes are very relaxed and the teachers are very understanding. Although there may be policies in the syllabus that seem strict, talking with your teachers can help them adjust the rules for you. Don't be afraid to approach the teachers at DePaul because they are very understanding and kind. I can't speak for everone, but all of my teachers have been this way so far.

Fines Are Arbitrarily Handed Out

Staff can access your dorm at any time and search the dorm. I had a fan by the window because it get warm in my dorm and the person who inspected our dorm called it a space heater and gave me a $25.00 fine. They also gave us a fine for a curling iron plugged into the outlet in our bathroom. My roommate and I had to protest these fines because and prove that the fan was indeed a fan and not a space heater and the curling iron belonged to one of our suite mates and not us. We did not even know that they left the curling iron plugged in. We eventually did get the fines dropped. I suggest you make sure you have nothing in your dorm room that should not be there because they inspect when you are not in your room.

It's All About Diversity at Depaul

Of course, with any institution, you have to follow the sexual harassment guidelines. Other than that, DePaul is very liberal in allowing students to live their lives freely and encourages students to have a social life. Don't think for a minute that you are required to believe in a specific religion or act a certain way because this is a Catholic institution. It is the exact opposite. DePaul's main focus is diversity. You will be exposed to many beliefs and cultures. No other college puts as much emphasis on diversity as DePaul does.
