Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The facilities at DePaul are generally regarded by the student body as phenomenal, with very little exception. Despite the fact that the University is smack dab in the middle of Chicago, DePaul’s has carved out a beautiful haven where students can step onto the quad and almost forget they are in the middle of one of the biggest cities in the United States. DePaul maintains its facilities impeccably—everything has a very clean and modern feel. There are often new buildings being built on campus or upgrades taking place within the older ones. While this sounds like campus is constantly under construction, the University generally makes these changes with little disturbance to the faculty and students.

The Ray Meyer Fitness Center is a prime example of the quality of DePaul’s buildings. The four-story gym is visited by hundreds of students, faculty, alumni, and Lincoln Park locals every day, and the building and tons of exercise equipment show little wear and tear. The newest building on DePaul's campus is the McGowan Sciences Center. Funded by donations from two of DePaul's prestigious alumni, this building is one of the most eco-friendly buildings in Chicago. It features luxurious classrooms with carpet made of recycled materials and bathrooms with regulated water pressure that help save tons of water each day. Overall, every building at DePaul is kept exceptionally well, and students enjoy hanging out on campus way past the end of their classes.

Excellent Library and Student Center

The size of the LP campus library is quite large, considering that there is another library downtown. The building is new, quiet, and sunny. I like to go up to the third floor and do my homework by the oversized windows. The Student Center is also new and always busy (in a good way). Inside there is dining, student services, computers and two printers, classrooms, and a coffeeshop. The gym seems nice too (I've never actually used it but it looks new and clean).

Facts

"Green" Initiatives

DePaul has started a huge green initiative. Even though it's located in the middle of the city, it's rare to see trash lying around campus, and you can find recycling cans in every classroom on both Loop and Lincoln Park campuses and around just about every corner. All new buildings on campus are built with environmental awareness in mind. It might not be long before there is a completely green college campus in the middle of Chicago.

Favorite Things To Do

During the day-to-day grind, many students kick back with a Chilluchino at The Bean, read a RedEye in the quad, relax by the lakeshore, exercise at The Ray, or walk to Lincoln Park Zoo. Students can also cheer on the men's or women’s Blue Demon teams, listen to a panel discussion, go to a School of Music concert or Theatre School play, check out an open mic night at the Lincoln Park Student Center Atrium, or attend student Mass at St. Vincent de Paul Church. One event that students look forward to is FEST, the end-of-the-year music festival held in the quad, which is definitely a highlight of the school year.
