Quick Stats

School Slang
  • Allstate: Allstate Arena, in the northwest suburb of Rosemont, where the men’s basketball team plays
  • B-Dubs: Buffalo Wild Wings, located on Lincoln Avenue and popular because of its weekly beer and chicken wings specials
  • The Bean: The Bean Caffé, a coffee bar with locations in the Schmitt Academic Center and the Ray Meyer Fitness Center
  • Beer Pong: Don't call it Beirut here! This is a drinking game consisting of 10 beer cups arranged in the shape of a pyramid on either end of a table. The goal is to throw a ping-pong ball into one of the opposing team’s cups. If the ball lands in the cup, the opposing team has to drink the beer and remove their cup from the table. The first team to land a ping-pong ball into all of the cups wins.
  • CDM: College of Computing and Digital Media
  • The Cheese Grater: Nickname for McGaw Hall because the metalwork surrounding the building looks like a cheese grater
  • The Circle: Saint Vincent’s Circle, an area just off the quad with a statue of Saint Vincent and two students, and the DePaul emblem
  • DCSA: DePaul Community Service Association
  • The Green Man; The Statue: The large, green statue of “Monsignor Egan” outside the Student Center, which is usually a meeting point for clubs, volunteer groups, or friends. Few students seem to know who Monsignor Egan is or why there is a large, very green statue erected of him on DePaul’s campus.
  • LA&S: College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
  • LPC: Lincoln Park Campus
  • The Pit/SAC Pit: A large lounge/study area in the Schmitt Academic Center that has a coffeeshop and serves as a central meeting or study place for students
  • Quarter: Really a trimester because it's one of three 10-week academic sessions
  • The Ray: Ray Meyer Fitness Center
  • SAC: Schmitt Academic Center
  • Sage: Sage Medical Center, DePaul-provided student medical services
  • Saint Vinnie: Nickname fondly used by students for Saint Vincent de Paul
  • Stucen: The Student Center
  • U-Min: The University Ministry Office
  • U-Pass: A University-provided CTA pass, valid throughout the school year
  • V and L House: The Vincent and Louise House, named after Saint Vincent de Paul and Louise de Marillac. Ten residents who commit one academic year to service, social justice, simple living, and intentional community can apply to live here.
Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • Chicago is super expensive.
  • College goes by quickly. Don’t waste a second of your time because you’re going to want it back.
  • Don’t be afraid of the size of the city—some students are terrified before they get here, but it gets so tiny, so quickly.
  • Everyone is generally open and accepting. Oftentimes, incoming freshmen may feel like they have to go to college to reinvent themselves, but at DePaul, anything and everyone goes, so you can be yourself.
  • If someone tries to sign you up to give a nonprofit donation, just tell them you already signed up. If you don't, you could be stuck talking to them for 20 minutes while they try to persuade you.
  • If you're not from a very large city, expect a bit of culture shock—there are lots of different people from different walks of life here!
  • Never buy books from the bookstore. Unless you have a ridiculous amount of disposable income, it is almost always guaranteed that you will find it 40 to 50 percent cheaper online. When you sell back your books, look for the local vans from bookstores around the city or flock to Amazon.com where you can get a good price.
  • Once you get involved with something, you’ll be expected to get involved with everything. DePaul is extremely communal, so once you’re part of one of the communities—ethnic, political, service-oriented, faith-based—you’ll be expected (and generally find you want) to be a part of them all.
  • So much goes on in the life of a DePaul student outside of classes. Most kids have jobs and booming social or political lives. You may get out of class at noon, but your day is just starting.
  • Talk to the Street Wise guys outside Dominick’s. Avoid the Greenpeace guys outside Dominick’s.
  • Try to learn about the city of Chicago before coming here. You'll stumble across really cool places on your own, but you'll want to make sure you don't miss out on some neat things you may have read about.
  • What to major in before coming to DePaul. The University presents so many options that it’s impossible to make that decision here.
  • You will get lost a lot if you don't have a great sense of direction.
Tips to Succeed
  • Enjoy it while you can because it goes fast.
  • Get involved—you’ll hear this over and over again, but it’s true.
  • Go to class.
  • Keep an open mind.
  • Live with awareness and diligence.
  • Save money.
  • Try everything.
  • Visit your professors during office hours, especially if you really enjoy their class.
  • Volunteer—there is such a good community of service-oriented students and faculty members at DePaul.

College Life Like No Other.

DePaul is very focused on diversity. You are required to take a course on exploring Chicago during your freshman year. Before you graduate, you must gain real world experience either through internships, co-ops, full/part-time employment or study abroad. DePaul offers outstanding resources to help you gain experience before you graduate and land a job after graduation. For instance, DePaul's job board is updated every day. During your search, you can visit the Career Center any day of the week to assist you in building your resume, writing a cover letter, and interviewing. They also have a mentor program where you can connect with alumni help you plan your career path. In addition, DePaul offers many career seminars, workshops and job fairs.

Apart from diversity, DePaul is located in one of the greatest cities in the world. There is always something to do in the city and surrounding suburbs. The train goes through both the Lincoln Park and Loop campus and there are many buss lines as well. You can get anywhere in the city on public transportation.

Facts

Traditions
  • DePaul–Marquette Game: Marquette is DePaul's biggest rival in men's basketball. This is usually an intense game and a really good time. While the majority of the tickets for this game are snagged early by alumni, get a hold of some tickets, if you can.
  • FEST: This concert features a big-name artist, and is a favorite DePaul tradition. Early in the year, students vote for three popular bands or musicians, and the winners perform in a concert in the quad, generally held in an academic lull between spring quarter and spring finals. Past performers have included Jason Mraz, A Fine Frenzy, Common, and Girl Talk.
  • New Student Service Day: This community service event is held the day before autumn quarter starts. All incoming freshmen are strongly encouraged to attend.
  • Vincentian Service Day: This University-wide day is dedicated to community service. Often, more than a thousand DePaul volunteers—faculty and students—venture out into Chicago for a day to volunteer in whatever areas they are needed.
Urban Legends
  • It's said that DePaul had its affiliation with the Catholic Church removed because of its urban atmosphere, diverse student body, and open-minded integrity.
  • Malcolm X once used McGaw Hall as his headquarters. The ironwork outside the building was allegedly constructed to keep protesters (inside and out) from breaking the windows.
  • Saint Vincent de Paul was also the Patron Saint of Fake IDs—supposedly Saint Vincent forged his birth certificate to make himself old enough to join the clergy.
