Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

DePaul students rarely return to the dorms after freshman year because off-campus apartments are cheaper, more convenient, and much more fun than living in the dorms. Living off campus provides an aspect of independence you just can’t at a school where students stay in the dorms all four years. It also provides DePaul students with more “real world” experience than their peers who attend more “residential” schools.

Most students view the responsibility of rent and various monthly bills as a tradeoff to not having to return to their hometowns every winter and summer break. Plus, living off campus means not having to deal with the rules and policies common in the dorms. Off-campus housing is very easy to find, and while most students end up looking for places May through August, it’s not impossible to find a lease that starts any month of the year. There is a lot of variety in the size and quality of apartments, especially if you are willing to look in the neighborhoods that surround Lincoln Park, instead of just Lincoln Park itself.

It Depends Where You Live

There are so many different neighborhoods in Chicago, it really depends where you choose to live. Lincoln Park (where DPU's main campus is located) is super pricey, and houses tend to be beautiful but older, but find a few roommates and cut the cost. Wrigleyville is surpringly cheap, and find a place by the red line and you can be on campus in 10-15 minutes!

Off-Campus in Lincoln Park

Living near campus in Lincoln Park is a bit expensive- but worth every penny. I found my studio after just two days of searching and got a DePaul student discount. I rent from a management company and have not had a single problem. However parking can be expensive. The neighborhood is very safe (I can fearlessly walk home alone from the train at 3 AM) and there are GOOD grocery stores within walking distance. Everything that I need is within one mile of my apartment: school, grocery, restaurants (from cheap late night tacos to fine dining), dry cleaning, shopping (Urban Outfitters, Akira, Express, Crossroads Trading, various vintage stores), and Lincoln Park!

Expensive Near-By Housing

Considering that the school is located in the heart of Lincoln Park, there is plenty of housing available if a student wishes to live off campus. However, finding affordable housing is a different story. Everything near-by the campus is very expensive because landlords know that some people are willing to pay a lot of money for the convenient location. However, apartments are more reasonably priced north of the campus. Although it isn't difficult finding an apartment, the school has no resources if you wish to live off campus.
