Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

To say parking is a problem at DePaul also means parking is a problem in Chicago. Student parking is available at DePaul, but it's pretty expensive when compared to traditional schools. A small number of students say they have very little difficulty parking, but a large majority will definitely deter attempting it. The issues with parking in Chicago are many, and while Lincoln Park is one of the easier locations to try to find a spot due to its many residential streets, there is a certain unpredictability to parking violations that results in getting more tickets than you would like. It's also difficult to know where you can park, especially with the fluctuating street cleaning schedules and changing weather patterns. And, usually, these changes are not well advertised.

When visiting DePaul, be sure to bring a roll of quarters. Current Chicago Parking meters only accept credit cards and quarters, with average rates of $1.25 an hour. Practice your parallel parking unless you want to use the DePaul parking garages, where discounted rates are available with validation or student ID. Paying for a year-round parking permit, either from DePaul or the city of Chicago, is very expensive, especially when combined with the cost of gas in Chicago (Lincoln Park is home to one of the most expensive gas stations in the country). Parking on or around campus also puts your car at risk of theft or getting vandalized—neither of which is very common but not unheard of either. If you want to bring your car to campus, you need to be aware of the risks, and the cons often don’t come close to outweighing the benefits.

Different for Campuses

In the downtown Loop area, the rates for parking are the same as those for parking in any other city's downtown area; expensive. On the other campus, there is street parking and better lots.

Worst Situation EVER

Take public transportation to the school of commerce, other than that parking should be fairly easy.

Walking Beats the Car.

Cars are a no, especially with public transportation as great as Chicago's. I highly recommend leaving one's car at home, Chicago has expensive parking and no spots. CTA is excellent and safe, but always go in pairs at night or early morning.

Getting a Parking Permit

Parking permit applications are available on DePaul’s website, and the permit can be obtained with a student ID. There are separate permits for the weekdays and the weekends. However, even if you have a permit, you are not guaranteed a spot, so it’s probably a better idea to just try your luck with the free parking along a number of the residential streets around campus.
