Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Compared to many colleges, DePaul has one of the easiest campuses to get around—which is one reason that bringing a car to campus is unnecessary. Between Public Safety, the El trains, Metra, CTA buses, and cabs, getting around Chicago is pretty easy once you figure it out. Public transportation in Chicago is easily accessible, relatively cheap (especially for students who receive a U-Pass), and more environmentally friendly than a car. It is extremely easy to grab a cab on any of the main corners in Lincoln Park at any time of day or night.

The Amtrak and Metra trains are quick and well-maintained for students looking to get out of the city for a weekend, and Midway and O'Hare International airports are both accessible via the E" or flat-rate cabs. When it comes to transportation on and near campus after dark, Public Safety provides rides to and from all places, including off-campus spots like the El stations, Dominick’s, and Advocate Illinois Masonic emergency room (available 24/7).

Pricey, but Essential.

It is pointless to have a car if you live in Chicago because there is no place to park it if you drove. Parking is expensive and driving in the city is awful. The public transportation is very convenient, but it's not the most "fun" experience. The el is always crowded, but a "u-pass" is included in tuition so students can ride for free. I commute into the city, so paying for the metra train is what ends up costing me the most.

Local Transportation

DePaul gives each of its students a pass for all the busses, Els (elevated Subways), and regular subways as a part of the tuition. There are always taxis around to take you places. There is also a train station that is just a few stops away on the EL that has busses and trains that will take you to different cities. The best thing is that on campus there are public safety cars that will drive you anywhere on campus, at anytime, with an unlimited amount of times.

The Chicago Transit Authority

The great thing about college is that we receive a U-pass for the whole semester to ride public transportation. A 80 dollar fee is charged for unlimited rides.
