College Prowler Take
DePauw’s D-III status offers a great atmosphere for sports. It allows students to play sports and still be students, as well as be involved in other clubs or activities. The complaint of some student athletes, however, is that the fan base is not as strong as other schools. Some students will make it out to every game for their sport of choice, but considering all sports and the amount of games, student attendance can be somewhat disappointing. Although games are a good time, Blackstock Stadium certainly doesn’t have the same level of excitement as an Ohio State or Notre Dame game. From a spectator perspective, the small size is great for cheering on friends on the court or field rather than untouchable student athletes. Odds are you will have class with the star quarterback or have a best friend who graces the pages of the DePauw for a sports achievement sometime in your college career. Games are also easy for everyone to get in, with no need for tickets or traffic jams. Most students enter DePauw as high school athletes, but may not wish to devote their time in college to sports—this makes club teams very popular. Intramural sports are also highly attended and very competitive. Most fraternities and sororities have teams, as well as freshmen and independents, making the games a great way to meet people and keep up with the sports you love, without the time commitments.

Varsity sports on campus are not...
Varsity sports on campus are not as big as they are at other schools. However, the biggest event in the fall is the Monon Bell Classic, which is the last football game of the season against Wabash College. Nearly every student attends this game, and it is a great time! IMs are quite popular on campus, as well. Generally, each fraternity, sorority, and residence hall has a team, and everyone is encouraged to play. |

Varsity sports are big to participate in, but there usually aren’t a lot of fans. IM sports aren’t really that big for freshmen; it seems like upperclassmen are more of the ones involved in them. |

DePauw is D-III. Although there...
DePauw is D-III. Although there are incredible football games like Monon, (the age-old rivalry between DePauw and Wabash, the biggest social weekend at DePauw), sports are still not going to draw the numbers that Division I schools will. On the other hand, at a small, intimate campus there is a better chance that students will not only know the names of players, but identify with them as friends and classmates. Therefore, there is more support among the student body. My biggest complaint is when school dismisses its students for the month of January in the heart of basketball season! |

It honestly seems like IM is hotter than varsity. |

Because we are Division III,...
Because we are Division III, people don’t really take interest in our sports teams. After living with student athletes, I know that they take their sports very seriously. It’s a shame that more students don’t attend the athletic events. IMs are popular, especially among the Greek houses. I haven’t participated in them, but I think most students get excited about them. |

Gyms and Facilities
- Indoor Track and Tennis Center - The Indoor Track and Tennis Center is one of the newest additions to DePauw’s sports program. It boasts nine outdoor and six indoor Deco-turf tennis courts; a 200 meter, six lane track; and an eight-lane straight away. The facility provides practice space for baseball, soccer, tennis, field hockey, football, and golf teams.
- Lilly Center - The Lilly Center is DePauw’s main gym facility. The gym is working on receiving new equipment to update facilities that were outdated. Lilly houses dance studios, basketball and volleyball courts, racquetball courts, the Erdmann natatorium, and the DePauw Athletics Hall of Fame. The Kinesiology department has recently started a personal training initiative to arrange regimented workouts at the Lilly Center. The gym is a popular spot on campus, especially for practicing sports teams. Afternoons are very crowded, and it can be difficult to get machines. Those who are looking for a serious workout rather than views of other sweaty bodies, beat the crowd and go in the mornings.
- Outdoor Workout Course - The course, located between campus and Blackstock stadium, is a student favorite for an extra workout or break in running. The course offers 10 obstacles to stretch and tone—ranging from a pull-up bar to hamstring stretches.

Getting Tickets
Most sports do not charge admission or ticket costs, generally a donation, if anything. Football and basketball are the most highly-attended sports, but students can walk in and easily find room in the bleachers or on the sidelines. The only sporting event that you will ever need to buy a ticket prior to the event is the Monon Bell football game. For this game, tickets go on sale two weeks before and it generally sells out, but if you really want a ticket, they aren’t too tough to come by.
Most Popular Sports
Football and soccer are the most popular fall sports. The games are often at the same time, so many students will head from tailgating to football to soccer. Although the stadium is small, and the Division III program can’t compete with the Big Ten, students still love to come out and support. Indiana is a huge basketball state, which shows in the winter. Basketball games are held at Lilly and the student bleacher is almost always full.
Most Overlooked Teams
DePauw cross country and swim teams have incredibly long seasons and generally do very well, yet receive little student attention. Meets are attended by groups of loyal fans, and stories are reported in the paper, but rarely is their success conversation on campus.
Best Place to Take a Walk
The Nature Park is one of the newest addition to the DePauw campus, offering nearly 500 acres of woodland space. The Park has over 10 miles of walking area divided into seven trails, ranging in difficulty and length. The Park is a great place to unwind, exercise, or simply take in the quarry views. Trails include the Connector Trail, Multi Use Trail, Woodland Trail, Rim Trail, Quarry Trail, Rail Trail, and Creekside Trail.
