Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

DePauw’s D-III status offers a great atmosphere for sports. It allows students to play sports and still be students, as well as be involved in other clubs or activities. The complaint of some student athletes, however, is that the fan base is not as strong as other schools. Some students will make it out to every game for their sport of choice, but considering all sports and the amount of games, student attendance can be somewhat disappointing. Although games are a good time, Blackstock Stadium certainly doesn’t have the same level of excitement as an Ohio State or Notre Dame game.

From a spectator perspective, the small size is great for cheering on friends on the court or field rather than untouchable student athletes. Odds are you will have class with the star quarterback or have a best friend who graces the pages of the DePauw for a sports achievement sometime in your college career. Games are also easy for everyone to get in, with no need for tickets or traffic jams. Most students enter DePauw as high school athletes, but may not wish to devote their time in college to sports—this makes club teams very popular. Intramural sports are also highly attended and very competitive. Most fraternities and sororities have teams, as well as freshmen and independents, making the games a great way to meet people and keep up with the sports you love, without the time commitments.

Haha...Sports...

The athletics at DPU aren't exactly top notch. In fact, they're not even a notch below that. The campus gets really pumped for sporting events and there's a whole lot of Tiger Pride to rally the teams...but the teams themselves don't have much going for them. Mostly sporting events are viewed as a time to party hard before, during, and after the event.

Many Different Options

The athletics at DePauw are widely supported throughout the campus. There are not always the greatest turn outs in games, but the students do show their support. The athletic facilities are very nice; however, the workout area is very small and needs to be updated. Most professors are accepting of student athletes missing classes; however, they are intolerant of them not making up the work. Just because an athlete misses a day, does not mean the professor does not let you skip out of the work.

Though I am not personally involved in many sports, the facilities are open for non-athletes as well as athletes. The facilities are very nice, though the work-out/weight room is a bit small for the amount of students that use it. Aside from this weight room, however, there is plenty of room elsewhere for practices, workouts, or other activities. As a small, private school in tiny Greencastle, Indiana, we don't really attract too many exceptional athletes, but we do pretty well with what we have. Our teams usually defeat our rivals, which is excellent. However, our football team is awful and the amount of fan support at these games is limited to the amount of alcohol present at the tailgates. School spirit is very high aside from this, however, and the close sense of community we all share during sports events is incredible. Whether we win or lose the game/match/meet, we win as a community.

Most Popular Sports

Football and soccer are the most popular fall sports. The games are often at the same time, so many students will head from tailgating to football to soccer. Although the stadium is small, and the Division III program can’t compete with the Big Ten, students still love to come out and support. Indiana is a huge basketball state, which shows in the winter. Basketball games are held at Lilly and the student bleacher is almost always full.

Most Overlooked Teams

DePauw cross country and swim teams have incredibly long seasons and generally do very well, yet receive little student attention. Meets are attended by groups of loyal fans, and stories are reported in the paper, but rarely is their success conversation on campus.

School Spirit

For having a student body of only 2,359 students, DePauw’s involvement in sports and school spirit is relatively high. Since the University is small and students are so involved, attendance is sometimes lacking, but loyal fans try to make it out for most games. Football games and tailgates generally have the largest attendance, with basketball as a close second. The Monon Bell Game, DePauw’s game against their largest rival Wabash, is without debate the pinnacle of DePauw school spirit. The game sells out annually, filling the stands with students, parents, and alumni. Ring Sing the Monon Bell Pep Rally is also a huge campus event with nearly all Greek houses participating and most of campus in attendance. Aside from game days, one will often spot students in DePauw apparel. Students seem genuinely proud of DePauw’s reputation, environment, and success. You can also see this in the alumni who are often present on campus for meetings or just passing through town.

Getting Tickets

Most sports do not charge admission or ticket costs, generally a donation, if anything. Football and basketball are the most highly-attended sports, but students can walk in and easily find room in the bleachers or on the sidelines. The only sporting event that you will ever need to buy a ticket prior to the event is the Monon Bell football game. For this game, tickets go on sale two weeks before and it generally sells out, but if you really want a ticket, they aren’t too tough to come by.

Best Place to Take a Walk

The Nature Park is one of the newest addition to the DePauw campus, offering nearly 500 acres of woodland space. The Park has over 10 miles of walking area divided into seven trails, ranging in difficulty and length. The Park is a great place to unwind, exercise, or simply take in the quarry views. Trails include the Connector Trail, Multi Use Trail, Woodland Trail, Rim Trail, Quarry Trail, Rail Trail, and Creekside Trail.
