Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

All first-year students are required to live in dorms on campus, which is definitely helpful for adjusting to campus life and building a sense of belonging and community. DePauw has two areas where most dorms are located: South Quad and North Quad. South Quad is all freshman housing and where most of the first-year fun goes down. North Quadders are often forgotten on the freshman scene. These students are in close proximity to the Hub and have large rooms, but they are sometimes distanced from their peers. The last option, outside of the realm of both North and South Quad, is Bloomington Street—though in most students’ opinions, those are the dorms to avoid.

On a whole, location aside, the dorms are pretty well maintained and inviting. Dorm bathrooms and common areas are cleaned weekly by University cleaning staff. The lack of private bathrooms is a complaint for some students, and most wish the rooms were larger, but they are very inhabitable, and most would say, cozy. Each student is given a preference sheet when accepted to DePauw that asks questions about living styles in order to pair students with roommates and housing. Most students get one of their top three choices. Your best bets for housing are Longden, Humbert, or Bishop Roberts.

Housing

Freshman live in freshman dorms which are mostly coed on each floor. You can choose to be on a single sex floor or to be in a substance free dorm. The best dorm is Humbert Hall and the worst is College Street. If you are not in a fraternity or a sorority, then your sophomore, junior and senior year you can live in an upperclassman dorm, a house, or a duplex.

Hit or Miss

The older dorms at DePauw, including Lucy-Rowland ("Lucy") and Hogate ("The Hoghetto") can have some serious issues at times. I'm a junior and at least four times during my time at DePauw pipes have burst during the winter due to students not completely shutting their windows. The climate control in all of the dorms works on a two fixed temperature system with minor control given to individual rooms. Essentially, it's going to be warm or cold in your room, so bring a blanket or some sleeping shorts.

On the whole, though, the dorms are as good as the people who live in them. While you may have issues with water temperature and fixtures being damaged, the dorm situation for freshmen is above average.

Dormitory housing for upperclassmen is considerably worse though. Several of these dorms are in need of significant repairs. as such, most upperclassmen try to get a duplex, a house, or into the illustrious Rector Village, a series of small apartment-style living units that were built in the early 2000s

Life at Depauw University

I really love attending DePauw. Professors are approachable and more than willing to put aside time to meet with students. Classes are challenging but rewarding. Greek life is pretty big on DePauw's campus, but if you don't want to be a part of it, there is still plenty to do. The only downside that I've found at DePauw is that it's situated in such a small town. However, as a result, crime on campus is very low. There's a general air of safety and comfort throughout campus.

Cleaning Service

Bathrooms and public areas are cleaned daily, except on the weekends. In the new Rector Village, the bathrooms and public areas are cleaned once a week, and the students who live there are responsible for maintaining the kitchen area.

Did You Know?
  • Campus lore has it that the ghost of a female resident once haunted Lucy Hall.
  • At the first snow fall of every year, students run naked around the boulder, a giant rock once thought to be a petrified turtle, which is placed outside East College.
