Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

DePauw is a study hard, party hard school. No doubt about it, the students like to drink. If you are 21, and in some semblance of order, you’ll be fine. Drinking at DePauw is done out of celebration for work well done. The police know that and understand it, so they let it slide. If you’re not 21, watch out. Most people underage can get away with drinking in the dorm as long as they’re smart about it. When it comes to drinking in public or trying to sneak into the bars, one under the legal age must be careful. Due to DePauw’s size, administration is able to give birthday books to bars and liquor stores that have each students name and birth date; if you give an ID that doesn’t match up to the book—you can be in big trouble.

The state of Indiana also has undercover alcohol police called “Excise.” They have been known to come to frats and bars in search of underage drinkers. That doesn’t occur often, but it has happened, and many students have the tickets to prove it. This doesn’t mean an end to all fun until you are 21, but if you choose to drink underage, do so carefully and responsibly. The administration is working hard to promote responsibility in all aspects of the DePauw community, and that includes the social scene.

Unrestricted

I do not feel restricted by any means. The beauty of college is living on my own, and I do not feel as if I am still attached to a leash. When students become to rowdy or underage drinking is present, the school jumps in immediately. I really appreciate this because it can be disturbing at times. Though those who are drinking and partying too obnoxiously may become upset about getting into trouble, but they are asking for it by being irresponsible and inconsiderate.

Not Strict

There is usually no need for the police; it is a very safe campus even on weekends.
