College Prowler Take
DePauw was recently named the third “most wired” university, and the campus is still planning more advancements. In fall 2005, DePauw developed a laptop initiative that required all incoming students to purchase a laptop through the University. The University offers discounted rates to students for the purchase of laptops. As much as this can be looked at in a negative way monetarily, this initiative has had a very positive impact on the campus. Students having their own computers means less students are fighting for space in labs and more students are able to work in a variety of locations on campus. Overall, it saves students lots of headaches, especially since DePauw has its own Help Desk on campus to help with any problems students may have with their laptops. And even though students are required to purchase laptops, public computer labs can still be found on campus. There are computer labs located in the Julian Science and Math Center, Roy O. West Library, and the Pulliam Center for Contemporary Media. These labs can be utilized by students for a variety of projects, from writing papers to editing videos for class. Many students do complain about the cost of printing on university printers. The University charges 5 cents per page, and although they give students 400 pages free, some students think this is hardly enough. For most, however, 400 free pages is plenty, and five cents per page isn’t all that much unless you are printing a large amount of work. Printers are plentiful around campus, and many students choose to bring their own printers to campus. In a pinch, it isn’t hard to find a fellow student willing to help you out by printing off a paper.

Freshmen are required to purchase laptops upon arrival to DePauw, either a Mac or a PC. We have WiFi located in every spot on campus. There are available computer labs for use. There is printing allowed on campus, and we are given a quota for every semester. It's pretty high, since I don't hear many people complain about it.

The Internet system is really good, and there are rarely problems with Internet or computer services. It depends on what kind of computer you buy, also. Students bring their own laptops, because a lot of work and assignments are posted online or emailed.

Students are required to purchase...
Students are required to purchase a laptop as a portion of their tuition when entering DePauw. Thus, everyone has their own laptop, and I have never had a problem finding an open computer in any of the buildings on campus. Also, we have WiFi all over campus, and also in many buildings and restaurants in Greencastle.

DePauw implements a mandatory laptop policy. Each first-year student has to either buy a Dell or a MacBook through DePauw, or you are on your own with buying your own laptop. I would say do your research on good, quality laptops that will last you well past four years.

The network is not too bad; however, there are a few times in the semester when the Internet is down due to system work. I have never had a problem getting into a computer lab, so they are never overly crowded. DePauw mandates that each student own a laptop computer, which I believe is a smart move. I have had a laptop all four years at DePauw, and it has been very beneficial to be able to take my work with me wherever I go. Additionally, the campus is wireless, so you can connect to the Internet almost anywhere with a wireless card. |
