Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

DePauw was recently named the third “most wired” university, and the campus is still planning more advancements. In fall 2005, DePauw developed a laptop initiative that required all incoming students to purchase a laptop through the University. The University offers discounted rates to students for the purchase of laptops. As much as this can be looked at in a negative way monetarily, this initiative has had a very positive impact on the campus. Students having their own computers means less students are fighting for space in labs and more students are able to work in a variety of locations on campus. Overall, it saves students lots of headaches, especially since DePauw has its own Help Desk on campus to help with any problems students may have with their laptops. And even though students are required to purchase laptops, public computer labs can still be found on campus. There are computer labs located in the Julian Science and Math Center, Roy O. West Library, and the Pulliam Center for Contemporary Media. These labs can be utilized by students for a variety of projects, from writing papers to editing videos for class.

Many students do complain about the cost of printing on university printers. The University charges 5 cents per page, and although they give students 400 pages free, some students think this is hardly enough. For most, however, 400 free pages is plenty, and five cents per page isn’t all that much unless you are printing a large amount of work. Printers are plentiful around campus, and many students choose to bring their own printers to campus. In a pinch, it isn’t hard to find a fellow student willing to help you out by printing off a paper.

Printing, Labs, and Wireless Access

Printing is easily accessible throughout campus. Labs never seem crowded, but that is probably due to the fact that most students use the laptops they purchase through the school's laptop program. Wireless access is usually dependable. However, it doesn't work in some dorm rooms. All students are provided with ethernet cords.

Generally Good Sometimes Slow

There are many computers available as long as it is not class time. During class sometimes it is hard to get a computer in the libraries or union building. The printers work most of the time. The computers in the union and in the libraries are generally slower than the others. The wireless printing is a very nice feature as long as you have that printer installed on your computer.
