Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

By looking solely at the numbers, DePauw can appear whiter than a polar bear on an ice cap, but the diversity presence on campus is stronger than it appears. Students come from all over the country and world (41 states and 20 countries), and offer a range of views and experiences.

DePauw has also been noted nationally for its initiatives with the Posse Foundation Program, which offers educational opportunities to successful public high school students that may have not otherwise been given the advantage of a university education. Since 1996, DePauw has sponsored two multi-cultural groups of 10 high school seniors from both Chicago and New York. Campus groups, such as the Committee for Latino Concerns and Association for African American Students, also have a strong voice on campus which advocates for, and advances the positions of, DePauw’s minorities. Although the University has made strides in attracting diverse students and appealing to many backgrounds, the largest burden lies on the students to unite on campus. Students often get very involved in clubs or Greek living units, which can limit the opportunities to mingle with diverse students.

International

There are many international students here and they create a good atmosphere. It seems, though, that Chinese students aren't as accepted as the others

Unexpected Acceptance

Yes DePauw is very white but you gotta look for connections beneath the skin. I came from New York City to this little town in the middle of nowhere and found people from small cities, big cities, from across America, and from around the globe. We have a diverse pool of students and DePauw made a great decision by filling us with DePauw pride during freshman orientation. As the year went on, we found different groups to bond with, be it a club, your race, your residence hall, your fraternity, your major, whatever, there's always a community of people who share your interests. You'd have to work hard to be alone here.

Facts

Gay Pride

The campus is relatively open to gay and lesbian students. Student organizations, such as United DePauw and the Forum of LGBT (lesbian, gay, bi, and transgender), are a large and vocal presence on campus. Their image on campus has gotten much more prominent in recent years, with large Coming Out Week displays and many campus-wide activities.

Political Activity

Most students are politically conservative, yet more socially liberal. The faculty tends to be more politically liberal. Groups such as College Republicans and College Democrats have begun to take a larger and more vocal role on campus within recent years.

Economic Status

Most DePauw students come from rather well-off families, the majority range from wealthy to financially secure. The scholarship opportunities (both merit and need-based) are abundant, allowing many students without the financial means to attend DePauw. On campus, there is little discussion of economic status on the part of the haves and the have-nots. It is generally assumed that if you are here, you have at least some money backing your name.

Most Common Religions

Protestant and Catholic

Minority Clubs on Campus

Association of African-American Students, Association of Students Interested in Asia (ASIA), Committee for Latino Concerns, Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance, International Student Association, Men of Excellence in Cross Cultural Alliance (MECCA), Rede: Student Pagan Alliance, United DePauw
