Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

It’s college—you’re going to find drugs if you search for them. If you don’t hunt them out, they won’t come find you. Marijuana is the easiest and most popular drug to come by at DePauw. The prescription drugs Adderall or Ritalin come in at a close second. Adderall and Ritalin are for people who have ADD or ADHD. DePauw students take it by mouth or snort it because it affects the users’ attention span—students use it to get more work done in a shorter amount of time. The drugs are said to improve focus and studying ability, and with the typical student load, they can be difficult to come by.

Harder drugs, such as cocaine, can be found at DePauw, but it is kept extremely quiet. So quiet that most students aren’t even aware that such things are going on. Hard drug use is generally frowned upon since most students understand the risks and ramifications. Alcohol is prevalent, but drugs can be easily avoided if you so choose. It’s the same as most universities; if you want it, it’s there, and if not, then it doesn’t bother you.

Alcohol

Drinking dominates any kind of campus 'drug use'. However, it's college and if you want to find drugs you will. The University and Public Safety turn a blind eye to 90% of alcohol use/underage use. You have to be stupidly intoxicated in the middle of the street to be stopped by public safety. After you're caught, there's a good chance you'll only get a slap on the wrist. You'll never find yourself in jail unless you run. Don't run.

Good, Clean Fun

Most students do not participate in drug usage. Alcohol, however, is visbible and widely participated in. It rarely becomes a problem for enforcement officials though.

It Is up to You!

Like in every college there is always going to be someone who decides to drink and use drugs. At DePauw there you have the choice of doing it or not and nobody will pressure in to doing something that you want to do. Fraternity parties is where most drinking is observed but you can still go to the parties choose not to drink and still have fun. The school makes a good job in educating their students about these topics and encourages them to make smart decisions.
