Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Campus lore has it that when Margaret Mead went to DePauw, and transferred after a year, she said that DePauw was a place for Betas to marry Alphas and nothing more. While this is giving little credit to DePauw’s excellent academics and programs, it does shine a little light on the social scene. DePauw is home to some gorgeous people. Due to the amount of attractive people and nature of a college campus, the random hookup is definitely not hard to find. Rarely will these end in marriage or even a steady boyfriend, but the “good time” factor is high. With such a large Greek system, this is typical.

Outside the party scene, guys and girls dress to impress and are definitely conscious of appearance. Even if you’re in class at noon on Friday, you will see people dressed to the nines! Most everyone who goes here was a “somebody” in their high school, which provides for an extremely competitive scene. Neither guys nor girls complain much about the appearance of the opposite sex, but the abundance of girls to guys is definitely a hand up for DePauw men.

Depauw Girls

For the caliber of girls on campus, you'd think you went to a state school like IU. DePauw is known to bring in consistently attractive women. For most guys & girls, DePauw is a school where their parents and family attended, so the attractive genes are destined to keep up year after year. City girls with family riches tend to outweigh most demographics, but after 4 years you'll know an attractive girl with every personality and background.

The Girls Are Hot

So the majority of DePauw's girls seems to be the preppy-but-nice hot girls from the Chicago area that have some money, dress well, and are very pretty. The guys come from all over, but a large chunk is from the Chicago area, again.

A Little Bit of Everything

It's a college, we've got every color of the rainbow and ranging from hot to socially awkward. But DePauw leans more towards hot guys and girls and with such a small community it's probably a great place to date seriously. But that's not what most people are looking for, this place is hookup central. And, again, with such a small community, people will know what/who you do.

Facts

Social Scene

DePauw's size makes it nearly impossible not to know or recognize most everyone in your year, and a good deal of the rest of the student body. The amount of involvement of the typical DePauw student, coupled with the small classroom size, makes interaction, and often friendships, easy to come by. DePauw students tend to boast the friendly, welcoming personalities attributed to most Midwesterners, which makes introductions and relationships quick and painless. Students can often be found socializing in living units, in campus clubs, at sporting events, or during meals. Conversation carries throughout the day, walking to class, in academic quad, at dining halls, and in dorm hallways. Students often allow extra time for their walk to class to account for all the friends they will chat with along the way—a two minute walk can easily become ten.

Hookups or Relationships?

One of many students' biggest qualms with the DePauw social scene is that there is no dating. Relationships are either super serious, wedding-bell bonds, or a series of commitment-free hookups. Students can easily go four years without ever going on a traditional date. Most social time, for those not in serious relationships, is spent in group situations party hopping or hanging out.

Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls

Frat parties serve as the vehicle for most short-term (read: one-night) relationships on campus. They are a great place to see and be seen, offer grinding on sweaty dance floors, and a nice selection of cheap beer (for those of age). Classes and student organizations are a more solid way to meet and get to know a prospective mate. They are beneficial for pairing similar personalities and passions together. The small size and level involvement allows for a lot of opportunity to work together both in and out of the classroom. These relationships tend to fare better than the typical party scene bond, but can often fall to the wayside once the course ends. The bars are a good option for those legal students to meet people outside their normal social circles. Everyone seems to meet at the bar by the end of the night, rekindling bonds with friends that you may not often see due to scheduling or have simply lost touch with over the years. The bars also have clientele from town and visitors to campus, offering a fresh angle to a social scene that can be getting a little old by the end of senior year.

Dress Code

Although the DePauw student body likes to entertain the notion that students all have our their unique and individual style, most DePauw students' wardrobe could easily fit in the windows of J.Crew, Banana Republic, Polo, Gap, or Abercrombie & Fitch. The dress code is generally name brand, collars popped, and Greek letter apparel dominates. Sweats and scrub wear is perfectly acceptable for the 8 a.m. class, rainy days, or the mornings after an exceptionally rough night, but most students tend to dress to impress for class. At night, almost anything goes. Greek parties and informals, as well as campus events, are often themed, and students go all out. It is not rare to see an abundance of cowboys, thug rappers, or ‘80s rock stars making their rounds on campus. On non-theme nights people tend to dress up to go out, even to the local bars. So, upon coming to DePauw, do not be fooled into thinking that being in the cornfields negates being in style.
