DePauw was ranked the number one school in the nation for its Greek scene by New Media in Colorado. There is good reason the school received this honor—the frat party is king when it comes to weekend entertainment. Most weekends boast at least two to three different parties, generally themed, for which you’ll see costumed coeds running all around campus. The frat parties are fun, a great place to catch up with friends, and really check out the student body. By senior year, however, the same themes can get old, and the crowd gets younger and younger. For most students, by junior and senior year, the bar is the place to be. Everyone generally stops by the frat parties, completes the customary loop through the basement dance floor, drinks a Natty or two, and then heads for the elder safe haven. The older you get, the shorter the frat visits become. The scarcity of bars in Greencastle is great for getting to see everyone. Sometimes, the fact that frats outnumber bars and there really is no avoiding a theme party, can get a little old. On those occasions, most people will visit friends at surrounding schools or head to Indy for the night. No matter what direction your night may take, odds are you will meet up with anybody you wanted to see at the bar by the end of the night. However, seeing those undesirable people is a downfall in a town with only four bars.

The parties on campus are very fun. Being a small campus, parties are very comfortable because they do not get too large, and you will generally know a majority of the people there. There are three main bars in Greencastle which are within close walking distance of campus. Students who are 21 years of age typically gather at the bars on the weekend before or after they have gone to a party. |

DePauw has a ‘work hard, play hard’ mentality that I do not find very healthy at times. Students should stay away from being overly committed and they also need to be aware of the unhealthy ‘play’ activities that take place. |

We are ranked eighth in the nation...
We are ranked eighth in the nation for party schools; that should speak for itself, especially since we have a small fraction of the population of what half the other schools on that list have. The strong Greek life makes for fun weekends, and even weekdays, sometimes. |

DePauw has a huge Greek...
DePauw has a huge Greek population. Therefore, the parties at DePauw are mostly fraternity parties. There are many pros to these parties, including a central location for all students, and themes that make every weekend fun. Yet, unlike bigger schools, DePauw lacks the house parties that could add even more variety to the overpopulated fraternity house. |

Bars, all four or so of them, are alright. They’re not clubs in any sense of the word. Bars are places to sit down and drink and watch all the other students get plastered. |
Facts
Bar Prowler
There are only four bars in Greencastle, which eases decision making and ensures that you will run into most everyone you wanted (and didn’t want) to see on the weekends.
Organization Parties
Union Board is the event planning board of campus. The student-run group often brings in different comedians, bands (OAR, Ben Folds, Jason Mraz, Dave Matthews), hypnotists, and other attractions that are open to the entire student body. The University has also been known to hold all-campus formals in the UB. United DePauw, an alliance of gay, lesbian, transgendered, and allied students hosts the Drag Ball and Anti-Prom, which are open to all students. AAAS (Association of African American Students) also holds formals in Indianapolis, as well as other events. Many campus organizations host both private and campus-wide parties that are advertised to students.
Bar Listings
Moore’s is the local hangout, where only truly adventurous students will venture. The food is good and the drink prices are cheap, but the crowd isn’t always welcoming to student newcomers. Moore’s has yet to make it into the DePauw mainstream bar scene, and the townies seem to like it that way. Moore’s Bar and Restaurant 17 S Indiana St. (765) 653-9939
The Duck, as it is known by most students, is the newest addition to DePauw’s bar scene. On campus, in the newly constructed Social Space, the Duck boasts five large TVs and great daily drink specials, perfect for getting the game or just getting a buzz. The Duck is also the only Greencastle establishment to allow entrance to students under 21. The area is partitioned to allow only 21 and over into the actual bar, and hand stamps are watched closely. The Fluttering Duck 2 W. Seminary St. On campus (765) 653- 2761
The Third Degree and Toppers battle annually for the title of most popular campus bar. Tides change faster than it takes you to down the Saturday Night Drink Special. The Third Degree offers a shrine to black lights and neon paint that is really only tolerable when viewed in the dark. For entertainment, they have two pool tables and a dart room in the back. The main attraction, however, is the karaoke that keeps MTV hopefuls on the stage (or pole) until closing time. The Third Degree 713 Main St. (765) 653-2999
Toppers has been at its peak recently—renovations that lengthened the bar and the building itself increased business and student interest. Next door to Third Degree, the spot offers a little more room, and a few less locals which most students prefer for their nights of drunken debauchery. Toppers offers pool playing and a juke box, but the rest of the fun is left to student creation. Old Topper Club & Steakhouse 727 Main St. (765) 653-9477
What to Do if You're Not 21
Being underage at DePauw can be tough, especially with the tightened watch of local police and Indiana State excise officers. Underagers tend to play it safe and stick to frat parties where drinking regulations are not as strict. The Duck is also a popular option that allows those under 21 to still hang out with legal friends.
