You're Safe from Crime... Just Don't Get Sick

Crime is relatively unheard of at DePauw. Recently, people have been stealing laptops from unlocked rooms and study areas, but as long as you're smart about things, you'll be fine. I have no trouble walking alone across campus at two in the morning, nor do my female friends, provided you stay on campus. Again, just keep your doors locked and keep your eyes on your possessions.

The reason I give this a B is due to the Health part of the prompt. The DePauw wellness center, while well-meaning, is not the highest functioning medical center in the world. A number of times, they give generic medicines and are very hesitant about writing prescriptions for just about anything. What is worse is Putnam County Hospital, located about five minutes from campus. They are extremely good at treating alcohol-related illnesses. Other than that, you're seriously better off getting lifelined to Methodist in Indy. Several students I know who work as EMT in training have told me horror stories about some medical mess-ups made by the staff, so I would say proceed with caution.

I received a decent amount of financial and merit aid. Everything has gone smoothly.

The campus is beautiful and the buildings are upgraded every couple of years. Everything is nice and well maintained.

Depauw Is the Bomb

We have awesome events in the night on all days. This range from huge frat parties to just small get togethers in individual room of a house or a dorm. If you choose not to go to a party there are also sport events, food lounges, and clubs that conduct fun activities that all are welcome to attend.

Depauw Is Safe

I have not had any major problems with feeling unsafe and do not know anyone else who has. DePauw is sure to allow the students freedom and to have fun but is also careful that we stay safe. Public safety is good at doing their rounds and Safe Ride is almost always available to give people rides to and from places.

Freshmen are required to purchase...

Freshmen are required to purchase laptops upon arrival to DePauw, either a Mac or a PC. We have WiFi located in every spot on campus. There are available computer labs for use. There is printing allowed on campus, and we are given a quota for every semester. It's pretty high, since I don't hear many people complain about it.

There is no off-campus housing....

There is no off-campus housing. There are plenty of awesome housing options, but because of the housing lottery there is the potential to get screwed over if you are a Greek student attempting to live outside of the sorority/fraternity houses.

The Internet system is really...

The Internet system is really good, and there are rarely problems with Internet or computer services. It depends on what kind of computer you buy, also. Students bring their own laptops, because a lot of work and assignments are posted online or emailed.

Students are required to purchase a laptop as a portion of their tuition when entering DePauw. Thus, everyone has their own laptop, and I have never had a problem finding an open computer in any of the buildings on campus. Also, we have WiFi all over campus, and also in many buildings and restaurants in Greencastle.

DePauw implements a mandatory...

DePauw implements a mandatory laptop policy. Each first-year student has to either buy a Dell or a MacBook through DePauw, or you are on your own with buying your own laptop. I would say do your research on good, quality laptops that will last you well past four years.

We do not offer off-campus...

We do not offer off-campus housing, but the apartments and duplexes available through the school are very convenient and are pretty nice to live in!

When coming to DePauw, chances are...

When coming to DePauw, chances are you'll meet your future spouse. The small population is filled with intelligent, attractive, and highly motivated people from similar backgrounds who spend four years getting to know one another very closely. Hookups are common, but serious relationships that form tend to last for a long time. It's very common for DePauw students to marry other DePauw students.

I have loved DePauw for many...

I have loved DePauw for many reasons. I have been able to play a varsity sport, join a sorority, hold leadership positions on campus, do community service, and get to know my professors, among other things. If a small school appeals to you, then DePauw is a great choice. I would not trade my experience here for anything.

I have a great group of friends, I’m getting an excellent education, I have formed many friendly relationships with professors, and I have a lot of fun and learned a lot. The campus is beautiful; I love the personal, small-college atmosphere, and there are a lot of great ways to get involved. DePauw is not going to be the perfect fit for everyone, but I have found it to be a great fit for me.

It’s been amazing so far, but I’m looking forward to breaking it up by going abroad for a semester. I rarely wish I were somewhere else. The people are what make it what it is.

I really enjoy DePauw. I have met some very open people, I have been exposed to new cultures and ideas, and I feel that I will receive a valuable education here. Most importantly, I feel comfortable here.

Greek Life is huge at DePauw (85...

Greek Life is huge at DePauw (85 percent of students are Greek-affiliated). Most parties occur in the Greek houses, yet everyone (Greek or not) is invited to parties. You do not have to be Greek at DePauw to have fun.

The parties on campus are hot,...

The parties on campus are hot, crowded, drunken messes. Rules are very strict about frats having parties, so if one house has a party, due to the small student body, no one else really has a party because everyone will go to one party. So that results in a ton of people running around drunk. You get to know all different sides of people here.

Because we are Division III,...

Because we are Division III, people don’t really take interest in our sports teams. After living with student athletes, I know that they take their sports very seriously. It’s a shame that more students don’t attend the athletic events. IMs are popular, especially among the Greek houses. I haven’t participated in them, but I think most students get excited about them.

The network is not too bad;...

The network is not too bad; however, there are a few times in the semester when the Internet is down due to system work. I have never had a problem getting into a computer lab, so they are never overly crowded. DePauw mandates that each student own a laptop computer, which I believe is a smart move. I have had a laptop all four years at DePauw, and it has been very beneficial to be able to take my work with me wherever I go. Additionally, the campus is wireless, so you can connect to the Internet almost anywhere with a wireless card.

The professors are great! They are very conducive to individual needs and they truly try to ensure that each student excels in the classroom. I really enjoy going to a school where the teacher knows not only your name, but also who you are—it makes class an enjoyable experience.

I have had amazing professors at DePauw. Every professor I have had has been completely open and helpful. If I ever need help, I have no qualms about visiting with professors.
