College Prowler Take

DePauw public safety goes out of its way to meet students by hosting events on self defense, safe drinking, and fire safety. They like to be a presence on campus that students feel safe contacting. Often times, officers will pick up students (of age) if they see them walking back to campus from the bar. They keep their eyes and ears out for trouble, but their priority is in keeping campus safe rather than locking up students. This doesn’t mean cracking a beer open with the local on duty is a great idea, but if you aren’t a danger to yourself or others, they will usually give you the benefit of the doubt.

Greencastle, as a town, is generally very safe. The occasional theft occurs, but rarely anything more than that. Just in case, however, the campus is outfitted with blue-emergency-call lights that offer students added protection, and the University is always in the process of adding more. Campus police can be reached by dialing 0 from any University phone, and safe walks or rides are available at any time. The fact that DePauw has so much security tells the students that the administration really does care deeply about their well-being. The most prevalent run-ins students have with the DePo-Po (as they are affectionately called) come with parking or permit violations. It is also important to watch your speed in Greencastle, and don’t consider drinking and driving, since the University’s initiative to curb the problem has put police out in full force. So watch your speedometer and put on your safety belt!

I feel very safe walking around the campus at night. And if I didn’t, there are plenty of options that the school provides to get me places after dark.
