Traditions
- Boulder Runs - On the first snow of every season, students run naked around the boulder, a staple outside of East College, which was once thought to be a petrified turtle.
- Dance Marathon - Annually, teams of students compete in a 24-hour dance-a-thon to raise money for pediatric AIDs research. The event is hosted in the indoor tennis and track facility, and supplies activities and events for all of campus for the 24-hour span.
- Lil’ 5 - This event is a close second to the Monon game. Little Five is a cycling race that takes place in the spring. All the fraternities and sororities create teams along with other non-Greek students and sometimes faculty. The teams race a track around campus as peers, faculty, and locals cheer from the sidelines.
- Monon - Monon Weekend is without a question one of the biggest weekend’s on campus. The Wabash and DePauw rivalry is one of the oldest and most intense rivalries in the country, despite the schools’ small sizes. It is always the last game of the football season and the victor leaves with the Monon Bell, an old Monon Railroad bell. Tiger fans, past, present, and future, make their way out for this event—rain or shine it is not to be missed!
- Old Gold Weekend - Old Gold is DePauw’s homecoming weekend. It allows any alumni to come back and relive their college experience, while also selecting a current senior Old Gold King and Queen.
- Recruitment - Greek recruitment or rush, as it is more commonly called, is a huge event on DePauw’s campus. The recruitment process differs slightly for males and females, but it begins when students return to campus second semester and lasts for three to four days.
- Relay for Life - The first weekend in May, students all gather on the football field for a day and night philanthropy that goes to benefit cancer research. Students collect money and walk the track to honor those that are battling or have lost the battle with cancer.
School Spirit
For having a student body of only 2,359 students, DePauw’s involvement in sports and school spirit is relatively high. Since the University is small and students are so involved, attendance is sometimes lacking, but loyal fans try to make it out for most games. Football games and tailgates generally have the largest attendance, with basketball as a close second. The Monon Bell Game, DePauw’s game against their largest rival Wabash, is without debate the pinnacle of DePauw school spirit. The game sells out annually, filling the stands with students, parents, and alumni. Ring Sing the Monon Bell Pep Rally is also a huge campus event with nearly all Greek houses participating and most of campus in attendance. Aside from game days, one will often spot students in DePauw apparel. Students seem genuinely proud of DePauw’s reputation, environment, and success. You can also see this in the alumni who are often present on campus for meetings or just passing through town.
