Quick Stats

Best Ways to Get Around Town
  • Bicycles are always popular.
  • Grab your car, or con a friend into driving.
  • Rollerblading is always a fun pastime to bring back.
  • You've got feet, use them.
Best Ways to Get to the Airport The easiest way is to buy lunch and gas and have a friend drive you. Airport shuttles are offered for a small charge by the University before and after breaks to allow students that must fly home easy transportation. Students sign up with the Student Activities Center and are picked up at the Union Building.

Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Transportation, other than the shoes on your feet and the car you brought, is pretty much nonexistent. Greencastle recently introduced a city-wide shuttle system that students and residents can use to get to various restaurants and stores for a small fee. Although this service is a great help to some DePauw students, most students rarely feel the need to take advantage of it. The lack of public transit really isn’t a large issue, however, due to the size of DePauw and Greencastle. The full length of the campus is an easy walk, even in the winter. Most students on campus have a car for the essential Wal-Mart trip or find little difficulty getting a ride. People at DePauw understand that some cannot afford cars or are not allowed to bring them to college; therefore, rides can be pretty easy to come by. Some students have even been known to walk to Kroger for the occasional grocery store run.

The campus has made a few attempts at offering transportation. Student groups have taken to creating a campus bike program, where bikes are purchased, tagged, and spread throughout campus for student use. If you spot a bike, you can simply pick it up, ride it to your destination, and leave it there for the next student to use. Although innovative, this program has had its fair share of problems, such as people stealing bikes for personal use or damaging the bikes. Safe Ride is a student run shuttle that takes party goers around fraternities, and to and from the bars. The service is definitely appreciated, but due to lack of funding and drivers, it is not always reliable. There is also a shuttle that takes students to and from the airport in the beginning and end of the school year and at fall, winter, and spring breaks. Though there aren’t taxis or buses in Greencastle, students don’t really need any of that. Walking or biking is a fine way to get you to pretty much anywhere you need to be.

Just Walk, You Will Survive

Everything is so close on such a small campus that walking anywhere is not a big deal, even in the the midst of a blizzard. Also, the fresh air is nice and campus is always so beautiful that the walk is enjoyable. If you are absolutely unable to walk, riding a bike is also easy, though the ride is short and having to lock and unlock the bike is more a a hassle than walking. Then, on late nights if you've partied too hard or it is too cold for your skimpy skirts, SafeRide is a nice way to get you from place to place. However, SafeRide tends to be very busy, especially on the weekend and cold nights, so it is not always an option. I would prefer SafeRide to be a bus system during the weekends because it is frustrating when it is leaving from where you are and going to where you are going, but you are not allowed on the vehicle because your call is not being answered.

Transportation

DePauw's campus is small. Transportation isn't needed for anything but going to Indianapolis. You'll make friends quickly enough if you want to go to anywhere off-campus or outside Greencastle. DePauw does provide a free shuttle for Greencastle destinations. At the end of semesters and breaks, they also offer buses to the Indy airport free of charge.

IndyGo (Indianapolis Public Transportation Corporation)

Hard to find. Greencastle is a walker’s paradise, everything is close. This is good because the town rarely sees cabs, buses, or any big city forms of transportation. Public transportation can be found though, in Indianapolis.
