College Prowler Take
Dickinson is a school where students can successfully participate in one or more varsity sports and not get behind in their workload. Since the philosophy at Dickinson is that academics come first, many varsity sports teams achieve “Academic All-American” status for their combined team GPAs. Dickinson is a member of the Centennial Conference and competes against schools like Gettysburg, Franklin & Marshall, Johns Hopkins, Haverford, Swarthmore, Bryn Mawr, Washington, McDaniel, Ursinus, and Muhlenberg. While Dickinson's sports teams vary in ability, the men’s and women’s cross country teams and the men’s and women’s swimming teams often have undefeated records at the end of their seasons. Intramural sports are also very big on campus and are adored by students—championship T-shirts are a coveted possession. The intramural program exists on a level between open recreation and varsity athletics and offers students an opportunity to compete in a structured and competitive setting. Participation is available in individual, dual, and team competition.

It depends on the sport. Our football team is decent, and we just got lights, so we can now have night games. Varsity sports are certainly important, but jocks don't rule the school. IM sports are a lot of fun and can often get quite competitive.

There are a lot of varsity athletes but attendance at sporting events is still low. Intramural sports are fun and popular. Everyone wants to win a T-shirt!

The varsity sports are getting better—in particular, football and lacrosse. The IM sports are pretty fun but don't get too much attention from other students. In fact, the varsity sports don't either. We're not much of a tailgating school.

Surprisingly, they are way more...
Surprisingly, they are way more intense than I had expected prior to attending Dickinson. I thought that since we are a Division III school, people would be involved in their sports but not to the extent that I have seen here so far. I also expected the coaches to be more laid back. They say that academics come first, and that may technically be true, but they expect 100 percent from their players or teams, making it hard for the student to do anything else on campus. This was actually the main reason I decided not to play varsity tennis. I didn't want to tie myself down to one activity that I enjoyed but knew wasn't going to be my future. Pretty much every sport is represented, and if it's not varsity, then there is a way to play it in intramurals or clubs. Intramurals, in my experience with singles and doubles tennis, were not as organized as they could have or should have been but fun while it lasted!
