College Prowler Take

At Dickinson, computers are used extensively, both academically and personally. Many professors use Blackboard for classwork, out-of-class discussions, and quizzes. Students can connect their personal computers to Dickinson’s ResNet for a fast connection to e-mail, the Internet, and the on-campus network. Anyone who doesn't bring a computer has many public-area computer facilities available to use, all with the same fast network access. Dickinson supports both Macintosh and Windows platforms, and the college computer labs are all very well equipped and technologically up-to-date. The library has three separate computer areas with machines operating off Windows XP and Macintosh platforms and also loans laptops to students using the library facilities. The HUB Microroom, the 24-hour computer lab on campus, has an equal share of Macs and PCs. All computer labs at Dickinson have access to a laser jet printer that prints extremely fast and is free of charge to use.

Morgan Field and the surrounding dorms, the library, the HUB, the Quarry, and the new Rector science complex are all wireless accessible, with the rest of campus not far behind. In the meantime, the ResNet (Residential Network) is available to all students in dorms and is relatively fast and problem-free. During mid-term and finals weeks, be prepared to fight for a computer if you want to work in the library. Many students are unaware of other available labs on campus, and some of the best studying can be accomplished in Rector or the basement of Old West, where few students spend their time.

Computer terminals are ubiquitous on campus. I can't go anywhere without the ability to check my e-mail, which my professors exploit to send last-minute messages about coursework, changes to class meetings, and the like. With an equal distribution of Macs and PCs, the computer options on campus aim to please all audiences.

Having your own computer is always a good idea but you will be able to make do without, as well. The library has laptops to borrow, and there is usually a computer in the library or Microroom if you look hard enough. Things get busy around finals, but even then, you should be able to find a computer.

It's definitely nice to have your own laptop, so you can take advantage of the WiFi in the library and in the dorms. On nice days, people bring their computers outside to study. As long as you don't try to get a computer at a crunch time, like Sunday nights, you'll be fine. The computer labs in the library and the HUB are the most popular, but the one in Old West is always empty.

Computer labs are frequently crowded, but never so that you can't find a spot on campus to print or get some work done. You probably could not get by without a personal computer, but there are enough computers around campus if you ever need one.

Dickinson just started to put wireless in the dorms, so that has been really nice. The computer labs are usually crowded at night, but the school also offers free laptops for students to use in the library, so it's never an issue. Everyone brings their own laptops, though.
