Parking Permits

Student motor vehicles must be registered with the Dickinson Department of Public Safety. Applications can be handed in any time by students who are sophomores, juniors or seniors at no cost. It is possible for exceptions to be made for freshmen under unusual circumstances, like needing to drive to place of employment or medical appointments. Requests for exceptions must be submitted by the student to the Dean of Students, in writing, with necessary and appropriate documentation in support of the request attached. The Dean consults with the Director of Public Safety and/or the Director of the Student Health Center and the decision is final.

College Prowler Take

Parking in the center of campus is tough during the week but usually isn’t an issue on the weekends. The prime parking areas and those closest to campus are along High Street in front of the library. These spaces are open to anyone, from faculty to campus visitors, at any time, except during street cleaning nights. Students can park in the lot behind Witwer Hall and the lot next to the Kline Center. Faculty lots—like the one behind Rector Science Center, next to Kaufman Hall, and the one beside ATS—are open only to faculty and staff from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays and to everyone else on weekends. One thing is for sure about parking on campus: If you exceed the time limit in a faculty lot on a weekday or keep your car parked on the street during cleaning nights you will get ticketed. The Carlisle Police and DPS give parking tickets on a regular basis and will notice if your car is parked illegally.

In order to park on campus, students are required to display their student parking permit on their vehicle, and DPS does regular checks for permits. However, students who park in the gravel lot across from the Kline can get away with not displaying the permit because no signs are posted saying “Dickinson Parking Only.” Two adjoining businesses use this lot as well, meaning the College cannot restrict it to only Dickinson students, and hence, cannot give tickets. This is a well-kept secret on campus and something that many freshmen, who aren’t allowed to bring cars, are unaware of.

Freshman can't bring a car, but honestly, campus is so small that you can walk everywhere. As far as parking goes, student parking lots are all on the outskirts of campus, so driving your car to class actually would make you walk more than it would to just walk to class. But, there are plenty of spots if you want your car on campus so that you can go into Harrisburg or somewhere else.

Parking is fine. Freshmen aren't allowed cars, although there are always a handful that use Carlisle Borough street parking all the time and spend their evenings moving their cars to avoid tickets. Cars are only necessary if you think you'll be leaving Carlisle often, because otherwise, it's not a bad town for walking and biking, especially if it's not too cold.

Parking on campus is okay. For the most part, driving through campus is unnecessary, so most of the parking is on the road. Freshmen are not allowed to bring cars unless they specifically petition the administration citing a valid reason for it. Some freshmen bring cars anyway and just park them on the street.

The campus is small, so you don't need a car unless you need to get to Wal-Mart or the supermarket. Parking tickets do rack up for some students, but if you park in the places you are supposed to, it is not an issue.
