If you can get downtown or to Jordan Creek you will have a blast, however the areas around campus can get a little sketchy so I would stay fairly close to campus

Des Moines is the perfect college town. It's only a few minutes by bus from campus and there is all sorts of shopping, bars, restaurants and lots of fun community activities going on. It'd be a nice place to live after graduation, and many students do live here after they graduate.

Des Moines is a city that is still developing. In comparison to other cities it doesn't have as interesting attractions and events as say Chicago and St. Louis. But, that being said, there are concerts that come to town, campaigns, and fairs. It can be a sleepy city.

Drake has a great local atmosphere. Since is is a smaller school (a little over 3,000 undergrads), you get to know people quite fast. I have friends in every class I take. The campus is very pretty and accommodating. There are various good, but inexpensive restaurants nearby, including Jethro's, and Haiku. Downtown Des Moines is just a 5 minute drive away, and just 15 minutes away is the Jordan Creek Mall, which has about every store or restaurant you can think of.

Around campus, there are a lot of good local restaurants and it gives a college town feel, but once you hop on the DART bus, you can easily get farther into the city and get that big city feel. Locals are pretty friendly towards students and there's a lot to do in the Des Moines area. There are multiple malls and plenty of interesting restaurants. I recommend Spagetti Works and Zombie Burger.
