Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Drexel is a very intense school with more of a technical focus than an academic one. True, the academic rigor of our classes does not match that of most top schools, but Drexel is working to change that by expanding each academic program. They have created more sophisticated elective courses in each of their departments, and added majors such as anthropology in recent years. Professors are generally very good at Drexel. Many professors in Drexel’s strongest fields, like business and biomedical engineering, are established professionals who teach well. Even in smaller departments like philosophy or foreign language, the professors are very knowledgeable, caring, impressive teachers. Most of the Drexel adjuncts teach at Penn as well. Most Drexel students will tell you that it is difficult to actually learn all of the material you are presented within awithin a 10-week term. Ten weeks is not nearly long enough to receive an enriching learning experience and grasp material. A lot of information packed into a small amount of time leads to constant testing and long assignments. Drexel students truly deserve their breaks each term. While the intellectual challenge is not as demanding as other colleges, the pace is very fast and our students work very hard.

In addition to taking classes, there are a great many ways you can enrich your learning experience. Drexel has many hidden opportunities that are waiting to be taken advantage of. Independent studies are available in every field, and are encouraged by most departments. There are research positions available (if not for credit or money, then for pure experience) with professors in lab science, social science, and the humanities. All you have to do is ask a professor if you can work with him or her. Additionally, Drexel’s math department has set up a summer internship program with the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. This internship’s application is open to all majors.

Great Program, Not the Best Support

The program itself is amazing and rapidly expanding. Its multidisciplinary, so students have the option of getting a degree that covers multiple realms of study. The professors and administrators for the program are helpful, engaged and interested in seeing the students succeed. The university as a whole, on the other hand, is not terribly supportive of any program outside of their Engineering and Business schools. Things are not well organized or funded, so resources are limited and/or outdated. Since the school of Arts and Sciences isn't a priority, issues you may have are not well handled. There are also fewer decent co-op opportunities for anyone outside of the heavy hitters.

Academics at Drexel

The co-op program at Drexel University is the reason why I came here. All the professors know exactly what they are talking about and are very helpful. The curriculum is superior throughout. The only problem is that it is a little unorganized since it is a newer school.

Drexel University has a quarter system because of its unique co-op program. Students take classes for six months (two quarters) and then go on co-op for six months (another two quarters). The co-op experience is designed to enrich students’ learning experiences, and to give them a leg up on the competition after graduation.
