Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Some people may not realize it, but yes, Drexel does have an athletic program—varsity sports are very limited at Drexel. We used to have a baseball team and a women’s volleyball team, but they were cut for financial reasons. We’ve never had a football team. Basketball is the only one we hear about, but chances are, most students at Drexel couldn’t tell you how the team finished last season. School spirit is not very high, and the athletic administration has been practically begging students to come to basketball games. What ends up happening is that all the other teams on campus are overlooked and forgotten. Intramurals, on the other hand, are much more popular. Students are involved in intramurals and club sports more than any other extracurricular activities. The most popular are: volleyball, basketball, and lacrosse.

Drexel has decent facilities, as it only has one gym. The gym facilities include basketball, squash, badminton, and volleyball courts, weight rooms, a swimming and diving facility, dance studios, and the Independence Blue Cross Wellness Center. But Drexel does offer a beach volleyball court, a multi-purpose turf field, and over 15 acres of athletic fields. So, in the end, Drexel is not exactly starving for places for students to be athletically active.

The Gym Is Awesome, Sports Are Meh

Definitely go to the Rec Center at least once, even if you don't like working out. It's new and really nice inside. It gets crowded sometimes, but if you can go when it's slower, I highly recommend it. The main sport here is basketball, but school spirit is so-so (except for the DAC Pack, students who go to every game and cheer like crazy). There are a decent number of intramurals and stuff like that.

I think thats it's really neat that our school is pretty much D-1 in every sport, but our school also lacks sports I am used to seeing: track & field or football

Most Popular Sports

Basketball is, by far, the most popular varsity sport. Lacrosse, field hockey, and softball are also somewhat popular. Many of the intramural sports, like flag football, are popular as well.

Most Overlooked Teams

Two of the most overlooked teams at Drexel are the women’s basketball team and the squash team. In 2008, the women’s basketball team won the CAA Conference Championship, beating Old Dominion who had won the past 17 years in a row. Also, the squash team won their first Chaffee Division National Championship as just a club team, beating such teams as USC, Vanderbilt, and Penn State.

School Spirit

Students at Drexel have a lot of school spirit. We might not show it at sporting events, but it’s there. It comes out more in community service organizations like Circle K and Habitat for Humanity. Drexel students can unite and work together for a good cause. Community service is something almost every Drexel student is proud to be a part of.

Getting Tickets

There's no need to get tickets to attend a Drexel sporting event, except basketball. Basketball's tickets are free to students and readily available at the DAC.
