Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • Get on the smallest meal plan possible
  • It’s more technical/vocational oriented than academically-oriented (but they’re working on that)
  • It’s not a big party school
  • It’s not good for people to be undecided about their majors
  • That the Drexel Shaft existed
  • You get tested constantly with four, 10-week terms per year
Tips to Succeed
  • Actually go to class
  • Always dispute bad grades
  • Do your homework yourself, so you actually understand the material
  • Don’t ask too many questions in Organic Chemistry Lab
  • E-mail holds you back—check it only once per day
  • Go to your professors’ office hours with questions
  • Know what you want to study before coming here
  • Pick classes you like
  • Research your professors before choosing your classes

Co-Op as Schooling

As part of your time spent here at Drexel, you will complete 6 or 18 months of co-op. This means you will work a job in your field based on your major and get paid a competitive wage. Something that is also unique to Drexel is that the rowing team has a boathouse on the famous Boathouse Row on the Schuylkill River. The crew teams are division I and have very good reputations.

Co-Ops and Campus Disdain

The Co-op program is wonderfully and the education is truly what you make of it. The night life around town is awesome and with all of the neighboring universities it is a college/city scene all in one. There is always fun to be had, you might not always have the time to have fun though. Depending on your major, course-work is rigorous. And as for a good old campus feel, many students bond over the ugliness and general distaste for the university. While it sounds like a bad thing, it ends up being a positive negative attribute that is 100% unique to Drexel.

Penn and Drexel

Personally, I think its awesome that University of Penn and Drexel are so close to each other. There are that many more chances for parties, friends and anything else you could think of.

Facts

Traditions
  • The Crystal Ball: This is an annual charity ball that has a homecoming king and queen, who are selected based on the amount of money they raise for their respective charity.
  • Kamikaze Egg Drop: The goal of the egg drop competition is for students to design and build a device, which will interface with the design committee’s trolley car to safely carry a large Grade A uncooked egg down a steel cable attached to the second floor of the Main Building into a barricade on the ground floor. After hitting the barricade, the device is then opened to reveal whether or not the egg survived its journey. If the egg survives, the device passes to the second round, at which time it is released from the third floor of Main to see how well it can hold up against the other devices which also kept the egg intact.
  • Research Day: One day each April, everyone in the Drexel community gathers in the DAC’s gym to present posters on any research they have done. There is research in all fields, both arts and sciences. Undergraduates, graduates, faculty, medical students, and residents all participate. Prizes are given for the best posters in each category.
  • Spring Jam: This is an annual concert in the spring. There are several bands, but one big headliner. Past headliners have been The Roots and Common.
Urban Legends
  • IRT help desk attendants are actually CIA agents
  • There is a Greek Orthodox conspiracy to take over the Earth
  • To receive good grades on exams, many students rub the toe of the bronze Waterboy statue located in the Main Building. Although the majority of the bronze statue has turned dark brown, the toe is highly polished and shines.
