College Prowler Take

Nightlife in Philadelphia is out of this world. The good thing is that you don’t have to wait until you’re 21 to be able to enjoy it. Many clubs let in people 18 and older, but don’t serve anyone under 21. Most underclassmen will remain on campus on party nights, frequenting house and frat parties. At the upperclassmen level, however, it becomes more fun to venture downtown and dance the night away. Philadelphia’s strong musical roots make it an ideal place for nightlife. Famous DJs like DJ Rap, Josh Wink, Tony Touch, DJ Revolution, Cash Money, Jazzy Jeff, and DJ Craze spin here regularly as guest DJs at clubs. There is a dance club for every kind of music fan out there. There are punk clubs, reggae clubs, salsa clubs, and more. And it’s great to meet all kinds of young people that you don’t see in school everyday.

If you are looking for a more laid-back time, the neighborhood bars in Old City and University City offer a different kind of night with peanut shell-covered floors, games of pool, and sports on TV. Students do not seem to be too fond of campus parties, so your best bet for a great time is to partake in the vast opportunities that the city has to offer.

Nightlife is for students over 21. There are a few 18-and-older clubs on Delaware Avenue, but I say skip the clubs. House parties are five dollars for guys, free for girls, the music is better, and you don’t have to pay for a cab back to campus. Your best bet is a school party here at Drexel or at Penn, Temple, Villanova, and other neighboring schools, or with friends that live off campus. It can also be fun to just hang out with some friends have your own "mini-party."

Parties on campus really vary. The frat parties can be fun, but I think most people go to house parties where you know someone who knows someone. We're pretty big on themed parties, probably because the guys want to see girls dress up. Drexel is in the city, so obviously there are good spots off campus. MarBar and Marmont are standard hot spots. Thursday night quizzo at Mikey's or New Deck Tavern have gotten a lot more popular. Most of the clubs and bars in the city are worth trying, except the Roxxy (disgusting).

Personally, I think the parties suck. I don’t drink, and since the word ‘party’ at Drexel means drinking and no dancing, I don’t go to them. Occasionally, some people will throw a good party where there is dancing involved, but most of the campus is too busy. There are a bunch of clubs in Old City—dress to impress. Brasil’s for Latin dancing is nice. I heard Suede is cool. The Five Spot has hip-hop on Fridays and Saturdays. It gets packed in there (a little too packed), but it’s only five bucks. Other clubs on Delware Ave. contain teeny-boppers. College night at Chrome is on Saturdays, and that is pretty good. The line gets pretty long, though.

If you’re a girl, the party scene is pretty good. Campus parties are free for girls, and girls can get into all parties easily (house parties and frats). Guys have a little more of a limited choice.

I don’t go to Drexel parties, but the bar scene is great. Fire is good, and so is the Manayunk Brewery.

Facts

Club Crawler

These are the most popular clubs for students. Philadelphia is full of clubs and bars—it would be impossible to list them all. Old City alone is a revolving door for them.

Organization Parties

Many clubs at Drexel will often rent out a restaurant or night club and throw fundraising parties. These parties are usually a lot of fun, and are thrown by groups such as Asian Student Association, DISHA, and Habitat for Humanity. Look for these organizations to partner with similar ones at Penn or other area schools.

Club Listings

Fluid is a dance club that is famous for its music. There is also a restaurant downstairs. Mondays are usually hip-hop nights, and the rest of the week (except Fridays) is usually split up between house, hip-hop, funk/rare grooves, and rock/punk/glam. Fridays are “Tasty Treats” with Questlove from the Roots and others. The resident DJs are very well known within and outside of Philadelphia. Famous guest DJs spin every month in both hip-hop and house. The drinks are moderately priced, and there is pretty much always a cover of between $5–$10.

Fluid

This club is made up of two floors of hot coyote girls and hot music with dancing. Drinks are moderately priced. You can drink for free one night during the week of your birthday. Ladies get free shots if they dance on the bar. This place can get crazy, but is a very good time.

Coyote Ugly

22 South 3rd St.

(215) 925-9573

This double-decker club has a very cushy atmosphere. There are several cocktail areas, and almost every section of the lounge has waitress service. Some of the Five Spot’s aesthetic specialties are beaded curtain doorways and waterfall walls. One dance floor is warmed by the light of an electric fireplace. There are trendy pop nights, hip-hop nights, and Latin salsa nights. You can get Swing lessons once per week. You can also go to “Candyland,” where you can snack on sweets and play—you guessed it—Candyland. Cover varies between $5–$10—dress to impress, though.

The Five Spot

5 S. Bank St

(215) 574-0070

This is a very laid-back lounge-style bar with minimalist décor. There are perimeter couches with drink service. They don’t have dancing, but play very loud, trendy, electro break-beat music. Drinks are on the expensive side, as a lot of so-called “young professionals” frequent. This place can get packed quickly, so make sure to get there early to get seats if you’re with a group—$5–$10 cover on weekends.

Blarney Stone is a smaller student hangout less than a block away from Cavanaugh’s. They do not have as many beers on tap, and they don’t serve food like Cavanaugh’s, but you will definitely have a good time here. Girls have been known to outnumber the guys on occasion. There is dancing almost every night, and the pool tables get crowded.

Mad Mex is the quintessential undergrad hangout. With cheap food, and somewhat cheap drinks, with good specials, Mad Mex keeps students of all persuasions satisfied. They have a tremendous menu of draft beers that changes with the seasons. Make sure to get a “Big Azz” Margarita during one of their two happy hours. They are huge and, in addition to having tons of alcohol, quite tasty. Specials: There are lunch, dinner, and drink specials every day. Usually, there’s a half-price lunch for students and half-price margaritas and bottles during happy hour.

Mad Mex

3401 Walnut St.

(215) 382-2221

MarBar has great drink specials as well as a fantastic atmosphere. Both Penn and Drexel students frequent MarBar, however its mostly Drexel girls and Penn guys.

Marathon Grill (MarBar)

200 S. 40th St.

(215) 222-0100

New Deck is more of a traditional Irish pub with a lot of wood paneling and Irish memorabilia on the walls. They have a great beer selection and a very eclectic menu, but the food isn’t terribly good. If you want a good old standby, the burgers are fine. This is a good place to go with a group if you’re going to sit, talk and laugh. They don’t have a dance floor, or very many TVs. They do have karaoke on Tuesday nights, though.

New Deck Tavern

3408 Sansom St.

(215) 386-4600

This is the typical college bar frequented by both Penn and Drexel students. The prices are right for both food and drinks, and the beer selection is impressive. There are about twelve beers on tap, and they have a bunch of refrigerators filled with every beer under the sun for bottles and take out. The place is filled with TVs, making it the perfect spot to watch a big game. Weekends usually see loud music, thick crowds, and dancing. Radio stations have big parties. Cover charges are very cheap and usually hover around $2.
