College Prowler Take

Philadelphia is a culinary hub when it comes to restaurants. There is always something nearby to satisfy every craving. Students in University City will be exposed to food preparation from all over the world. Both upscale restaurants and cheap pubs are within a short walk of campus. Most students take advantage of Philadelphia’s restaurants on the weekends. Take a walk or a subway ride into Center City and try something new every week. You’ll never run out of restaurants here.

Philly is known primarily for its cheesesteak joints and its Italian, Indian, Thai, French, and fusion restaurants. Although Philadelphia is one of the richest cities when it comes to fine (and not-so-fine) cuisine, many of its students are not rolling in the dough, so to speak. It gets very expensive to eat out frequently. Many of the more popular establishments like Pod and Penne are very expensive because of their location in University City. Students (and their parents) are easy prey because students tend to get tired of cafeteria food pretty quickly. This causes a huge dilemma for students who are broke, but want a decent meal. If you look around, however, you will find some great spots throughout the city that are easy on your pocket. Some things to keep in mind when eating in Philly: A Philly cheesesteak is just a “cheesesteak,” not a “Philly steak” or a “steak sandwich,” and a hoagie is a lunchmeat sandwich on a long roll with lettuce and tomato; don’t ever call it a “sub” or a “hero.”

Going to Center City or Old City...

Going to Center City or Old City with friends is fun. There are endless options here, and I have barely gotten to them all. Bubble Tea House on UPenn's campus is a local favorite, as well as the new Mikey's Sports Grille. Go to Mikey's to watch the awesome Drexel basketball team and eat their awesome wings!

Most people shop at Fresh Grocer on 40th and Walnut, but they are pretty overpriced. There are some other grocery stores past 40th, but they're pretty sketchy.

There are many good restaurants all over the city. Pat’s Steaks is good for a cheesesteak and fries, Las Cazuelas Tan Bien is a good Mexican restaurant, and for American food, the Pontiac Grille on South Street is good.

Cosi is a restaurant on Penn’s campus that is fantastic. Their bread is legendary, and whenever someone goes, they get bread requests from others. The New Deck Tavern is another great restaurant at the edge of Penn campus near Drexel.
